Buying new or used?

I am looking at replacing my car that was written off.
Luckily for me I had gap insurance on my car so I have around £4000 to put down as a deposit.

I really like the Audi A1, But I'm deliberating between buying new or used.

Can anyone offer a little insight into audi and what would be my best option?

Thank you :)

I bought a new car after passing my test in June. Initially looked at an A1 as I loved the thought of a: having an audi, and b: it was a nice looking car. Didn't think so much of it after having a poke around though, especially for the price. Ended up looking at more cost effective hatchbacks and went for a Kia.

Didn't want to buy second hand as I know !!!! all about cars and don't know anyone who does!

My mind is pretty firmly set on the A1. I have been driving sensible cost effective cars since I passed in 2008 - I really want something a bit special.

I can understand that. I wanted an MX-5 but was talked out of it by a broody girlfriend

I think it is a nice car, I just didn't think it merited the premium price, especially as I wanted a fairly high trim level as I hope to keep the car until it's dead.

No worries of me getting broody so that is ok :)

I don't know what models you were looking at so I can't comment on trim but the ones I am looking at are a world away from my 09 Corsa :rotfl::rotfl:

That and I've been slightly blinded by the xenon lights - Well and truly in love with this car

If you can get something 1-2 years old then a large amount of the depreciation will already have come off the vehicle's value, plus any issues will likely have been worked out. Plus you'll probably still have the remainder of the manufacturer's warranty too. :)

These are the kind of things I've been weighing up.

Do I take the 3 years no MOT and haggle around with my local audis playing them off for price (I'm also very good friends with a salesman at stoke Audi, not that I think this will help)

Or do I look used and risk forfeiting add ons I know I want?
  • A1s hold their money well and extended warranties are pricey. New might be a better option especially if the dealer has any finance offers on.

How long are you intending on keeping it? If 4 years or less then a lease might be worth looking in to, but only if the cost of the lease works out cheaper than the depreciation.

This was a dilemma i had, and it does vary from car to car.

I looked at a new golf diesel, came in at around £18K with metallic paint.

I got a 9 month old one for £12,400 from a main dealer with 13K miles.

Three year old ones were making £10K at the time.

Its about finding that sweet spot and it'll take some analysis as to where it falls for that car.

One thing i would say is dont be afraid to travel to buy it - ANY Audi dealer can maintain it under the approved used / manufacturers warranty.

Personally, i'd be going on to autotrader / audis own site and sorting by price for the model you want as a starting point.

Why waste money on a so called 'premium' car like an audi, when a Toyota (or most japanese cars) is better to drive, more reliable, cheaper on insurance and repairs. I would even suggest a Ford or Vauxhall over an audi or any so called 'premium' car.

You are also getting the A1 on lease/finance (whatever it maybe) and in either case you don't actually OWN the car.

My suggestion is save your money for more important things in life and get a used Yaris/Aygo/Jazz etc
