  • hope this is the right place to post this - i have just obtained my credit report as i was rejected for a credit card, whilst i have no defaults or any bad credit it states i am not on the electoral roll, i have lived in my current property for 12 months and voted last yr so i am definately registered but i have checked the address and it is correct on equifax. i've contacted the council who confirmed i am on the electoral roll but as my building is a new development there has been an error on their system with the post code - can i get my credit report updated as the council are being rather unhelpful in providing a letter or any proof that i am on the electoral roll at my current property??

This is not uncommon, particularly where blocks of flats/new build is concerned. The agencies collate info' from 3 main sources 1) you 2) public records 3) their clients, the lenders. Obviously, this info' is only as accurate as its sources.

I would inspect the electoral roll. You can do this at your nearest public library.* Pay particular attention to the way your details are recorded on the register. First name(s) as well as surname. Also an extra line may be inserted/omitted or the order reversed, where new build or a block of flats is involved. You'd be surprised how often this happens.

When you apply for credit facilities, bank accounts etc. or to the credit reference agencies, ensure your address matches the details as they appear on the electoral register and you'll avoid all the inconvenience of sending documents through the post as proof of residency, because your ID can be checked electronically using the electoral roll.

More importantly, your electoral roll status can mean the difference between acceptance and rejection.

*If you opted out of the edited register (which is sold to anyone who wants to buy and which may be viewed in a public library), you can check the full version at your local electoral registration office.

    Hi,
Thanks for the information this is really very helpful.. When businesses suspiciously access my credit report I feel violated. But instead of putting a gun to their heads I decided to take advantage of a right that few people know they have. A relatively new law allows you to place a permanent security freeze on your credit report with each of the three credit reporting agencies. If you do that, no one can access it ever without your permission. Finally, you can take back control of your credit report! But id you sign up, be forewarned: It's a hassle. The problem is, people still don't ask for your permission. That's just fine if its a criminal. But if you sign up, be forewarned: It's a hassle. Please tell us more about this mysterious law, while trying to sell us one of your condos ! What the hell are you on about ? The data protection act, which has required anyone to have your permission from at least 1998 ?

If you apply for credit - do Lenders get to see specific entries/ reasons on your credit report? Can they see, for example, specific CCJs and what they were for?

Or do they just get to see a 'score' based on their data?

    Hi,
I used the credit expert free trial over 2 years ago, I was wondering if anyone has successfully signed up for the free trial for a second time?
If not are there any other free/nearly free options for checking your record?
Is the Equifax trial just as good as the credit expert one?
Also, does credit expert's search show up have an impact on your rating/score?

    Cheers,

    Hi,
I've been scouring equifax website for a contact email to cancel my 30-day trial and going round in circles for days. All I can find is an 0870 number to call.
Looking on here I've found an alternative 0800 number but now they're closed till Monday 8am.

The date I applied for the 30-day free trial was 7th Feb so Sunday 8th March (tomorrow) is the last day I can cancel presumably........and they're closed!!

Have I got my dates wrong or have I messed up completely and have to pay the monthly payment? I'm assuming that 30 days is calendar days not working days. Does anyone know if they take the payment the very next day after the 30 days is up?

I'm well peeved to have spent so long looking for their email address rather than looking here for an answer in the first place.
    ;) debt free...yippee

Why not order your credit reports? (For help, see page 1 of this sticky.)

Then you'll be able to see at first hand the data UK lenders search, when you apply for credit. Experian sends explanatory notes which are a good read as well.;)

AFAIK, you're eligible for one free trial with Experian. The same applies to Equifax.

No. Your enquiries about your own files are not seen by their clients, the lenders or anyone else. Lenders are interested only in the number of credit checks made by other lenders.

  • Hi All,

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post my question, but I'll give it a try....

I recently obtained a copy of my free credit report with Equifax and on it it shows that there is a settled credit agreement with Welcome Finance, whereby I had agreed with them that I would pay an amount for full and final settlement and this would show on my credit file.
But - it shows 'Partial settlement - Payment recieved as full and final settlement althought payment would not clear the balance.

Is that fair that they can state this seeing as I was in dispute with them ovet the amount in the first place and they made me an offer to settle the account?

Another question I have is that it also shows on my report, that there is a default placed on there from a company called 'Arrow Global Ltd' - now I have no idea who they are and it shows that I have never paid them - which is of course correct as I have no idea who and why they are there. Now if I contact the company to find this information out, do they have to prove that I did indeed take out an agreement with them? Such as provide me with proof of a signed contract of some sort that you take out whenever you take on a credit agreement?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks all
