On the toy front We bought a ball pool which could also be used as a paddling pool. My lo had hours of fun with this and infact baby number two has one for Xmas from when he/she is 6 months old.

Another brill buy was a little tikes cozy coupe, this is still in use now and my lo gets hours of fun. She used it from a year old.

High chair, I love the ikea one, easy to clean and can be used easily at a table without the tray when they get bigger.

Jumperoo is a must-have if you don't already have one, but I'd be tempted to ask for it as an early present as they're great from 3-5 months (depending on baby's head control etc) but only last a few months until baby starts getting more mobile. My DS hasn't been in his since he was ~7 months after loving it for ages as he started crawling and cruising and didn't want to be restrained anymore!

Other great things to have are the Vtech walker (the panel comes off so good to take off and play with until baby is able to use the walker) and Sophie the Giraffe. Poor Sophie has been chewed half to death! ;)

If you can get people to club together then it might be a good idea to get a next stage car seat as they are expensive and it's a spend that's crept up on us, and I'm sure we're not the only ones that's happened to! :o
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!

A travel booster seat for highchair purposes if going away (we got ours from Mothercare and they're so much easier than carting high chairs to relatives' houses). Next stage up grobags (and next stage up again if you have a tall child - my youngest was bursting out of the 6-18 month ones by 1 year but she's off the charts in terms of height).

Squirrel funds away for whenever the infant carrier type car seat gets outgrown.

Stuff for outdoors when the weather gets nicer (and it's still available relatively cheaply) - scuttlebugs are fab at the 1 year mark or so, cosy coupes (although my 1 1/2 year old persists in trying to get in via the window ending up with a very irrate pair of legs hanging out of there! One of the smart trikes with the handles got used a fair bit with our girls.

Depending on your view on them (which may or may not change depending on the type of child you end up with) - backpack reins are handy to have put aside ready for when they start walking... some people get right mardy about them but with my toddlers going through the "very mobile but with no sense whatsoever" phase they were a godsend.

Jumperoo was fab with our youngest who got very frustrated before she could do things like sit and stand unaided - but she outgrew it really fast because of her height. Didn't have or need one with our eldest - but our youngest was a totally different personality and was NOT HAPPY with the world. Not sure I'd buy one new though - they go so often second hand cheaply.

Don't buy a brand new Bumbo. There are so many 2nd hand ones out there, and babies either love them or hate them..

Completely agree. Also despite the whole idea that children can't get out of them, my youngest son was teeny (in size not age) and could easily get his chicken legs out of the leg bit and then he'd just rock himself backwards which resulted in smacked head against floor and/or food all over face. Borrow someone elses first!
