beanielou said:pollyanna_26 said:This is very interesting. I got my mortage in Nov 1975 with no problem. 25 years of monthly payments and it was mine.I do remember when women needed their father or a husband to sign agreements. It sounds odd now but in the 60s and 70s it was common to rent a radio, Later a TV too. When my first husband and I married in 1969 we rented both but he had to sign the forms. It took me a few years to realise it was cheaper to buy radios and tvs but the fact the company would repair or replace the items influenced us when we were starting out on a budget.I joined Women's Lib early influenced by Helen Reddy's I am woman. My first husband was a lovely caring man but I believed men and women should be equal.2nd husband was a nightmare but the attitude had changed . I had wonderful poice officers and a couple of judges who after 2 attempts finally sent him away with another injunction and a lasting power of arrest. He had to move at least 20 miles away and never come near us again unless he wanted a long prison sentence. That did get shut of him, pollyx
REmember Radio Rentals & the like. Just how it was done then.
Glad you got shot of your second ex.
L xI remember you talking about I can't say goodbye to you on Mooloo's thread. I wonder how she's going on.Our first radio and TV were Radio Rentals too.Looking back now affordable housing was much more common then. After WW2 my mum and dad were offered a brand new prefab. I was born after the war but my mum often talked of how lucky she'd been with a fitted kitchen which wasn't common then and a gas fridge and big gardens . She'd lived through the Liverpool blitz and her chidhood home in Bootle had been bombed out of existence. When my first husband and I married we were saving to buy a house. HIs best mans mother suggested we move in with her Father who lived alone. We were to pay rent and bills and I was to do the housework and cooking. I should have refused but went ahead. She had done the cleaning and cooking when she visited him according to her. Well it was good house but filthy. i don't think the toilet had been cleaned in years. Feet stuck to the tiled floor in the kitchen. We were both working full time and spent evenings scrubbing and pouring bleach down the toilet. I got pregnant after a few months and we were shown the door. I went to my mums and he went to his. When our son was born a friend of mine told me the big ground floor flat in the house she had a flat in was up for rent, It was damp and it was the only time I've seen silverfish which used to run across the hearth of the coal fire. Our son became ill and my childhood Dr made many a visit. We were on the housing list but the Dr got on to them and we were offered a two bed ground floor council flat round the corner from my mum. First dd was born a year later and we were offered a 3 bed council house a few doors away from my mum. With my husband dying young I moved away for a fresh start not knowing the toxic one would enter my life. I don't keep in touch with him but was contacted a few years ago when he was reported missing by his landlord. He was found after a few days in his attic flat. He'd fallen during the night and landed against the locked door of his bedroom. The cleaner heard him after a few days and the fire service had to take out his attic window to gain entry and let the police and ambulancemen in.He'd broken his hip and was cut to bits. The police thought he'd been attacked at first. He'd already sustained a lot of neurological damage over the years through drink and drugs. So a long hospital stay shouting at the staff and patients . A spell in a rehab unit and now in a lovely sheltered housing apartment. Dd2 is the only person who bothers with him . She seems to have blocked out all the years of his violence and ranting. He was never out of work and had a number of big pensions but I wanted nothing from him. I just wanted him gone.I think it's wrong councils started selling off their housing stock to Housing Associations and Private landlords. So many willl never have the chance many of us did. Whether it was for life or a stepping stone to buying it was fair and affordable.I worry about the youngsters now. A pandemic, disrupted education and big holes in the welfare safety net. I hope I'm wrong but I think life will be hard for many of them.pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

When my friend was diagnosed we clubbed together at work and bought her a little throw /shawl to put around her shoulders, a pair of pretty pjs and a nice note book and pen to record thoughts and doodle in, and some bulbs in a little pot so she could watch them grow. Her sense of smell and taste were non existent so she had specifically asked not to have food, drink or smellies. There were a few of us clubbing together though. Thankfully after a lot of surgery and treatments she has amazed the doctors and doing really well. I think that was about 6 years ago now 👍

Re planted up tubs you could email a local garden centre and ask if they are going to do them this year (as they are all closed where you are at the moment). If I were them I would sense a business opportunity and say yes. There is also a woman near us who has started a small business tending the graves of other people's loved ones and she takes flowers or planters there and weeds around them, while people cannot go. She is in a couple of local FB groups and then the local paper did a bit of a feature. Failing that M&S and some of the online flower people do some limited options. And at one time Morries did planters but you would have to phone as they don't appear online. Round here Morries offer same day delivery to people phoning in their orders (£20) who don't use a computer, and so do Coop
How about a decent notebook so your friend can write down things - it could be personal thoughts, stuff to remember, or notes or thoughts they might like others to have after they have gone. I treasure a couple of everyday things my Dad wrote to me, simply because they are in his beautiful handwritingSave £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £4863.32 out of £6000 after May (81.05%)
OS Grocery Challenge in 2025 I am at £1286.68/£3000 or 42.89% of my annual spend so far
I also Reverse Meal Plan on that thread and grow much of our own premium price fruit and veg, joining in on the Grow your own thread

Anyway. In other better news I am really really pleased with where I am with the decluttering.
The house has not been this clear in many many years.
This has been a gradual work over the past couple of years & every wee while I have a wee blitz.
