When we bought our first terraced house in 1980. They wouldn’t take my wage into account in case I got pregnant. ‘A woman’s wage couldn’t be relied upon as you will become pregnant’. And those were his exact words....I was fuming as we had a massive mortgage of £8,250 pounds to find. And my MIL went into the building society where she had been a customer for a long time and knew the manager......’to put in a good word’ for us. 😂😂😂😂Another world😂😂😂😂😂
    It was.
Hard to believe in some ways it was 40 years ago.
In both senses - 40 years is only the average working life, but hard to believe things were so old fashioned. I remember having all my interesting work taken off me when I was pregnant because my manager was convinced I would not return afterwards. I successfully appealed his annual review marking when I did return under discrimination rules "a temporary dip in performance because I was on maternity leave for 4 months and he took all the productive work away and gave it to my colleague".
    Just blooming incredible

This is very interesting. I got my mortage in Nov 1975 with no problem. 25 years of monthly payments and it was mine.
I do remember when women needed their father or a husband to sign agreements. It sounds odd now but in the 60s and 70s it was common to rent a radio, Later a TV too. When my first husband and I married in 1969 we rented both but he had to sign the forms. It took me a few years to realise it was cheaper to buy radios and tvs but the fact the company would repair or replace the items influenced us when we were starting out on a budget.
I joined Women's Lib early influenced by Helen Reddy's I am woman. My first husband was a lovely caring man but I believed men and women should be equal.
2nd husband was a nightmare but the attitude had changed . I had wonderful poice officers and a couple of judges who after 2 attempts finally sent him away with another injunction and a lasting power of arrest. He had to move at least 20 miles away and never come near us again unless he wanted a long prison sentence. That did get shut of him,

Loved Helen Reddy, both I Am Woman & I I Cant Say Goodbye to You (No matter how hard I try).
REmember Radio Rentals & the like.  Just how it was done then.
Glad you got shot of your second ex.

I remember renting a television in 1974 when my ex-husband, baby daughter and I moved into our first home - no mortgage problems here - we got a brand new council bungalow as we were on our new town's second generation housing list!  Those were the days!🤣
A good riddance to your ex Polly!
Fingers crossed for your car beanie🤞
How, how awesome was that to get a council hoose that was new & a bungalow to boot.

    So lovely readers.
    More help please.
Where can I buy pre planted tubs that don't cost an arm & a leg?
Another thing.  A friend from school has been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer.
Would like to send her a wee something.
Any ideas? Not flowers or inspirational quotes.
