Stuart McBride was too gritty for me and so was Val McDermid! Rankin is always brilliant though . There are some brilliant scottish crime writers around at the moment. Have you tried Denise Mina or Alex Gray? I'm reading Kate Ellis at the moment as her detective books are set in South Devon and the police detective is black and has an archaeology degree. It's a good series.
I think blues or lilacs would look nice with a purple carpet. There are so many shades to choose from that tester pots are probably a good idea. They can look really different when you actually get them on the wall and different again when they dry.
