A Linksys WRT-54 (and the Wifis slowly losing range as the electronics die), well known issue with them, and a LaFonera (Model FON 2100A/B/C).
Both got flashed with DDWRT - Linksys is easy, LaFon instructions here - http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/LaFonera_Software_Flashing0 -
I don't think I'll bother flashing my old Fonera+ - it can't do 802.11n which makes it pretty much obsolete regardless of any niceties offered by the firmware.
I had a response from Fon which suggests they don't even understand the issue with the open hotspot using the host's IP address. I really CBA chasing this up as they've confirmed just running the new router will maintain access to the Fon network.Hi Mark,
Thanks for your email.
I hereby confirm that the Fonera UK with MAC ID 00-18-84-xx-xx-xx has been removed from your account [email removed]
Your second router is a Fonera Simpl, that is not affected by the changes in our platform, therefore you will still be able to connect to our worldwide network for free. The IP of most of our Foneras can be modified, but this is not the case of the Gramofon for example.
We hope this information was useful, Mark.
Do not hesitate to get back to us if you require further assistance.
Thanks for choosing Fon!
Kind regards,
Rim

I think I'm going to have to do the same thing. I've checked mine daily this week after getting in from work and every day there has been no internet access.0 -
Sounds like you might need to ask for a replacement. I haven't checked mine is actually working I'm just checking "My Fon" which says it's online and sharing. I will give it a go though through both APs to make sure it's OK.

Both the private and Fon APs are working. Last time I touched the router was 26th November.0 -
When Fon emailed to say my query was marked as solved I decided to have one more go spelling out the problem in more detail...Thank you for removing the obsolete router. You clearly have not understood my query about IP the address.
With the old system if I logged in to to Fon hotspot and checked the public IP I was using it would show as being a BT IP. Any misdemeanours made using the connection would be addressed to BT whose logs would show the Fon login and the individual reponsible.
When I log in to the Fon hotspot on the new router and query the IP in use it is my own public IP. This means that any wrongdoing by someone using my public Fon hotspot will be attributed to me. The range of misuses are quite large ranging from copyright infringement through sending of malicious communications to child pornography offences. There have been prosecutions in the UK for all of those quite recently.
How can the authorities identify who is using the connection if they just get my IP address?

Did you mean, "When I log in to the Fon hotspot on the new router and query the IP in use it is my own private IP."?0 -
No I didn't.
Check your own current public IP address using a site such as http://www.whatismyip.com/ or for that matter just type what is my ip into google. Take a note of your IP.
Now log into your Fon generated public hotspot and check again. It will be the same IP and that is not what used to happen. Your Fon generated hotspot used to tunnel the connection through BT and you would see a BT owned IP as your public IP.
I suspect you don't know what a public IP is. Come to that I doubt that the Fon TS bods do either judging by the useless responxes they have given to Richard_T and myself.0 -
The old la fonera used to give a separate ip - when checked with ip tracing websites it didnt show as BT, but as an IP address belonging to Fon0
