I just got my fon balance transferred to my paypal account. I hope everybody else who had a balance in there double-checked their details when asked by email a month ago.

I suppose you could always open it up and fit a screw aerial connector

I bought the Fonera Simpl model 2405A about 2 or 3yrs ago. It has a screw on antenna which I simply replaced with a better one. It has lost the "friends and family" login bit but still gives me my local private wifi plus the FonFreeInternet one. I just successfully logged into the FonFreeInternet with my fon email address and password. As previous people have mentioned a new login page now with no option for visitors to buy a pass.

So maybe a second hand fonera simpl is an option if they will still let your register with that of course. Tech support told me I can re-register with my device if I want the facebook friends login system. That gives 5mins to anyone who connects and unlimited to your friends on facebook who register on your fonera. PROVIDED you have registered with Fon with the exact same email address as you have with facebook - or so I read somewhere.

Oh yes my Simpl has been used with Plusnet and the external ip address from fon is the same as my plusnet router. It does give us a better wifi signal for when friends stay and park their motorhome in my drive, and lets us use BT-Fon hotspots. Living in a rural area only ever had two unknown connections (probably from ramblers on the local footpath), so not worried much about bandwidth or identity.

Thanks for all the posts in this thread which were helpful when I was wondering what had happened to friends and family.
