The instructions are poor but I persisted and did get mine to reset. I'm guessing the reason you can't get into yours is because you modded the password and have forgotten it.

That is the odd thing. One of the Foneras I tried was brand new out of the box and the admin/admin password didn't work. It is possible that the person that sold it to me was being economical with the truth when he said it was unused though.

I'd guess so. Or it could just be duff I suppose.

I've emailed Fon support too now from the link above.

It's going to be changes BT have made that are screwing up the login and the Fon hotspot. I'm guessing there was a pushed firmware change too as my own and others online routers have screwed up in one way or another.

The real question in my mind is is this all a typical IT foulup or have BT deliberately decided to boot non-BT customers off their Fon network?

On the the firmware issue, I wonder if this has affected all UK Foneros or just those who have recently rebooted their routers.

    An update.

I contacted Fon support for a second time using the link Richard_T provided and this time their response was a lot more helpful. See below...
    Hi Gloomendoom,
    Thanks for using Fon!
Due to changes in our system, one of our oldest Foneras, the Fonera 2201C-UK, is no longer compatible with the Fon network. This means that attempts to log in to the public signal of these Foneras will fail.
For the owner of the Fonera 2201C-UK the result is that logging in into the User zone is currently not possible. The private signal will still be available though, and you still have the privilege to connect to other Fon hotspots for free.
    Kind regards,
    Maciej

I hope BT are prepared to honour the bit in bold.
  • I've had a slightly different reply that suggests either signing up to BT or buying a new style fonera
  • Heres the full message, ive made added bold to the major variation in what youve been told
As we're currently replacing and improving our systems, the Fonera router model FON2201C-UK is no longer compatible with the Fon network.
We therefore regret to inform you that this Fonera will no longer be connected to the internet and, if this router model is currently the only one your Fon account, you no longer have access to the user zone.

We therefore advise you to subscribe to BT for a broadband connection that will come with a Fon account, or purchase a Fonera through our shop: https://shop.fon.com/en/products/all
We hope you continue to enjoy the Fon network!
    Kind regards,
    Matt

Im not sure if the userzone means fon wifi from other hotspots or not. Iive heard it refereed to this - the userzoene being the welcome to fon page when signing into a hotspot

It does seem a bit vague.

I've asked for clarification over whether I need to keep the Fonera+ connected to maintain Fon access privileges even though it isn't a functioning Fon hotspot.

I'm still able to sign in to hotspots. How long this will remain the case is another question.

I also think that it is a bit poor that we weren't informed prior to them pulling the plug.

You should respond and point out that the Fon shop only seems to deliver to the USA so purchasing another router will be difficult.
  • This version of the Fon shop appears to work:
https://shop.fon.com/en/products/all ive just been through it as far as add payment details ( credit card )

Looks like the old fonera is dead. :(:(

Any uses for a couple of old Fonera boxes ?

All in all not very impressive, if the old kit is no longer usable you would have at least thought that Fon would have had the decency to warn users that this was going to happen, and then offer them a discount on replacement kit, the only thing I can think of as to why this has happened after years of use is a botched firmware update

Well it's annoying but I just bought a new one. At just over £30 for continued availability of the Fon network it's a fair price to pay.

I see this one is N which may make it some use as a booster but it looks like the antenna may be fixed making the external one I bunged up to make the Fon AP more use unusable.
