Duvet tog?

Options
About to buy a new down duvet but not sure what tog to go for? the bedroom atm is 19c (with no heating)and probably won't go lower than 15-16c in Dec-Jan, thinking on getting 10.5 or should I go for 13?

  • We're happy with 4.5 all year round. I think I would melt if I slept under a 10.5 or a 13.

wow 4.5...I thought 10.5 was on the low side.

My present duvet is 13.5 but that's synthetic, tbh I can't believe it's 13.5 as it's not that warm, do they reduce tog as they age? some say down is warmer?

We use 4.5 in the summer, 10.5 in the winter, generally swapping over when the clocks change! When I was single I needed 15 in the winter, but found that too much with two of us. :j

apparently down is better quality than the standard quilt, so in theory you could drop a tog without any probs.

going by our house, - just upgraded the house to new winter quilts and weve gone for 15tog (standard synethic), got swopped a couple of weeks ago when the 1st cold chill hit, - for me its far to hot, - just me in a double bed, I do have the dog sleeping on the bed, usually by feet or leg, no heating on at mo, sweating cobs.

If I had thought more I would have just gone for a 13.5tog.

Summer is 4.5tog, usually gets changed about April time. x
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx
  • We always had a 10.5 or 12.5 tog but after suffering with 'heat' due to the synthetic filling we were advised to try a wool quilt - I disbelieved at first thinking I would be boiling but can honestly say the best purchase we've made ... it keeps/controls your temperature so you only need one quilt all year round - some can be quite expensive but Dunelm are quite good - we've had ours 2 years now and never looked back.... http://www.dunelm-mill.com/shop/fogarty-wool-duvet-240485

Yes i found my old 13,5 tog quilt i was so cold under it.I ordered another one on Amazon and the difference is amazing as i am nice and warm now.I bought Kingsize and it cost only about £12 well worth that price.

I would always buy an All Seasons duvet so you can use it all year round.

10 is way too much unless you really like to be very warm.

Best thing to do is get one that seperates ie its a 4 and a 6 that can be put together to make a 10 if needed. We got one of these a few years back but have never needed more than the 6 on its own.

I think much would depend on whether one sleeps alone or not, what temperature the thermostat is set to, if one likes to sleep with an open window, choice of bed clothes, and even eating habits (a large evening meal may cause more heat).

I have an 'all season' duvet with 4.5 & 9 that can be buttoned together to make 13.5, and I recommend buying a king size duvet for a double bed (especially if you're above average height).

I agree with the others who have got all seasons duvets. Mine is microfibre, 4.5 tog and 9 tog I think, which have poppers to keep them together if you use both.
