All Seasons that split in two are great - and although the thicker "half" is usually fine in Winter, heaven forbid your heating breaks down, you've got the Summer one to add to it. Even better, buy two synthetic singles rather than a double & you can each choose your comfort level & each part can fit in a domestic machine for washing in the Summer.
  • Isn't sleeping on them very bad for them? I slept on synthetic ones accepting they would not be good for on too of the bed, I would have thought it would have ' squashed' the down very poorly? I was taught when I was young never to sit on a quilt, duvet or eiderdown, but if you must sit on a bed ( also poor behaviour) to fold these items back to protect them from damage. Is this wrong?

( can I forgive myself the times I forgot to fold back the eiderdowns:o)
No, I think that's an old wives tale to stop children from bouncing up and down on their beds!
They need plumping up, obviously but it does save buying an expensive mattress topper and does the same job. You need to have go up a size on your fitted sheet.

Do people keep heating their bedrooms all night with 10.5 quilts?

Our heating goes off at 9. I have the bedroom radiator low anyway. I need a 13.5 tog in winter.

Nope, rad in bedroom is turned down low and goes off completely at 9pm, window is open 24/7/365, we still only need a 4.5.

I agree with the others who have got all seasons duvets. Mine is microfibre, 4.5 tog and 9 tog I think, which have poppers to keep them together if you use both.

Check that the poppers are adequate - I have never had problems with them until I bought an expensive super kingsize All Seasons duvet from John Lewis and ended up having to put velcro on the separate duvets to keep them together as otherwise the 2 parts kept drifting apart from each other even though the poppers stayed connected.

Heating is on a timer so the temperature goes down about 10pm and off at 11pm (I usually go to bed after 11.30pm) and comes back on at 6.20am ready for everyone getting up at 7am.

All our radiators are turned up to max......I can control the whole house temperature with the digital thermostat/timer.

10.5 suits us fine - I put a blanket on top of my half when its very cold, but my other half doesnt need it.

4.5 tog with the windows open and no heating in the bedroom

However my new mattress has memory foam and we find we are a lot warmer in bed compared to when we had a feather topper on the old mattress. Last winter we used a 10.5 tog feather and down duvet but I can't see us needing it this year

I'm surprised so many people use a 4.5 tog all year round, what a hardy bunch you are!
My summer duvet is 10.5 togs, for winter I move up to 13.5 and always use a hot water bottle too. I never have the heating on in the bedroom though and the window is always open, so it is a cold room.
  • I could sleep under my 15 Tog goose down quilt ALL year round.
It was only off for about 2 weeks in summer when it was being laundered - I found the 9.5 not quite warm enough (there were cooler days this summer)

I need my 13.5 tog, I get cold so easily
Doesn't help that our flat doesn't have any heating, so the temp can easily drop below 15C.

For those who feel cold under the high tog: have you tried getting it warmed up first? Because I have no heat to start with, I have to add it via the electic blanket, and once I'm cosy it's fine til morning. If I have a bath before bed, I don't need to turn on the blanket at all.

On the other hand, once it's summer I boil under the 4.5 duvet *sigh*. If you're not sure, I don't see why you can't have the 10 tog and add blankets depending on the weather.
