10 is way too much unless you really like to be very warm.

Best thing to do is get one that seperates ie its a 4 and a 6 that can be put together to make a 10 if needed. We got one of these a few years back but have never needed more than the 6 on its own.

I'd have ten if it were a synthetic one most of the year tbh, :D. And I've had two high tog duvets on top , slept on one and had supplementary bedding. And an electric blanket!

Totally depends on things like whether you have heating, or if you do if your room is heated, or if you sleep with the window open along with other things like state of health etc.

My silk filled duvet , bought at the end of spring seems to e a lot more flexible and better for me than either synthetic or cheaper end down filled ones. Its an all weathe one and the first time I've used the lighter weights ever on a duvet. A delicious novelty. ( and nicer when my DH is home to be under the covers together! )

We're going I to its first winter and we're both really impressed. Usually I'd already have the electric blanket on by say, September, but its been mild in the main. I'm a little concerned it won't be enough for me....the very cold sleeper when its really cold but we'll grab a spare duvet for the top if that's the case. And we have central heating I can use in the bedroom if I have to this year...which is a new thing to this house.

( I prefer a cold room, preferably with fresh air, but a cosy bed)

I buy 4.5 tog for summer and change to 10.5 for winter.

What shocked me is that it's cheaper to buy new ones, then to wash duvets at the laundrette. Rather than bin them, I offer them online for dog bedding.

We have a 4.5 all year round, only when it's below freezing outside do we put a bedspread over it, but that's usually gone by the morning.

We did buy a higher once once, but was way too hot, it's up in the loft somewhere I think.

  • 13 tog hungarian goose down for me in winter. I can't bear the weight of synthetic duvets. I sleep on my old duvets when I buy new or change from summer to winter duvet. They're under a sheet and it saves storing them.

Isn't sleeping on them very bad for them? I slept on synthetic ones accepting they would not be good for on too of the bed, I would have thought it would have ' squashed' the down very poorly? I was taught when I was young never to sit on a quilt, duvet or eiderdown, but if you must sit on a bed ( also poor behaviour) to fold these items back to protect them from damage. Is this wrong?

( can I forgive myself the times I forgot to fold back the eiderdowns:o)

I'm happy with a 4.5 tog all year round with central heating. I do use a 10.5 tog in winter but turn the heating off early so the bedroom is cool...but it's still too warm. I usually end up throwing it off.

went for the 10.5 hungarian down, if I find it too cold, I can always order the 4.5 too.
