TalkTalk Prices going up - So PlusNet for me

I have been looking to move away from Talk Talk having been with them for 4 years they are really not offering what I want any more. :( I am actually happy with TalkTalk but not their prices.

Basically I want Broadband and anytime calls. They seem to want me to have a TV box, a mobile sim (for free?) and other stuff I don't need or want / want to pay for. I rang to get my MAC code (which they said I didn't need) and spoke, or listened more like, to someone I had trouble understanding and didn't really take much notice of my issue. Having told them what I would be paying if I moved to PlusNet they offered me something that was about £10 dearer per month + £30 credit and said is that OK!! NO! I went over it again or tried to, and the offer wasn't much better, I think it was worse and they said the anytime calls would be going up! But they would include mobiles - which I don't want! :(

So in the process it turns out that they are also upping the monthly charge for anytime calls to £7.50 from 1st Dec 2014 (for everyone not just me) from around the £5.00 I pay now. And the monthly line rental would be £16.70 !

So I am going to reluctantly make the jump from TT move to PlusNet, saving a load of money in the process at least for 12 months till TT get their act together.

I know PlusNet are part of BT and thus this makes me "feel" a bit better about it as my exchange is BT.

1) Has anyone made this jump and are they happy with their PlusNet connection?

2) Do PlusNet force you into using "their" router like EE does or can you use your own? That is what put me off the EE deal.

3) How long does the transfer take? As I have 18 days left on my pay a year up front line rental, I want to get the timinge right.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Dave

You are not forced to use a PlusNet router.

I would say that you should submit your order with PlusNet as soon as possible so as to complete before your line rental runs out.
  • Becareful jumping to Plusnet I was with them for over 4yrs and they constantly put their prices up and also if your server goes down will take ages to repair trust what I say I have actually moved to TT only last month and was quite miffed at them putting up charges but would rather have a provided I can trust

Thanks for your quick response, I would like to use my own router so that's good news. :)

I will be switching soon in the next week.... well at least before 11 Nov cut off date.

I can swap back to TalkTalk or any others if their price goes up (after a year). Will fix line rental for a year.
I have been swapping Gas & Elect for years and now will more proactive with broadband. It is a competitive market, I wish I had opened my eyes earlier. For £10 / month less after factoring in the £75 cash back, I can take a few outages. I had them with TT. But not as bad as Virgin Media which I had before TT.

Whether you are with TalkTalk or Plusnet (or any other supplier via a BT exchange!) you are dependent on BT Openreach to solve all the engineering problems external to your premises - their response times can be very good ....and also absolutely awful!!

Plusnet user forums are an excellent source of help with active CS .Repairs generally i found them very responsive to any problems but i don't have a server .
TT like many would not use the service if you paid me .
  • I have an Old AOL account and have been told the £5 rise for Unlimited Broadband and Anytime calls will rise to £12.20 a month. My Line rental is still with BT.

As I have been on such a good deal before (£7.20) I have not looked elsewhere but at £12.20 it still seems value despite the £5 rise.

IS IT A GOOD PRICE ?

I would appreciate any comments - Thanks

I would recommend calling them to give your notice to cancel. I'm sure (as in my case) they will offer you a reduced rate (or credit) to avoid you leaving.

Let us know how you get on.
  • After being with AOL for many many years and always having been able to negotiate a great deal when my contract was due for renewal, I again tried in October, using the usual "Can I have my MAC code please" tactic.

I do have my line rental with them, as my deal last year was 6 months free for absolutely everything (line rental, unlimited broadband and Anytime calls etc)and 6 months @ line rental £14.80 and broadband @£2.10 (which included a £5 discount), Anytime calls were free.

However, this year they were not really interested in any sort of great deal and would only offer me the same package as I was on i.e. giving me the £5 discount on broadband. As line rental had increased to £15.95, that meant a monthly payment of £18.05.

They did though offer me a great deal on transferring to Talk Talk. I was very happy with AOL and really hesitant to transfer across. But the clincher came when I was told that pretty soon all AOL customers will be tranferred to Talk Talk anyway. Not sure if this is true, but would make sense, for them to do so.

Anyway, I got 12 months line rental free, Simply broadband @ £3.50/month and Anytime calls @ £5/month. So 12 months @ £8.50/month. Giving me a yearly saving of £114.60 over AOL.

So far I haven't noticed any difference in my broadband speeds. But have had to fight tooth and nail to get my "Special Deal" in writing from them.

AOL is just one of TalkTalk's brands and you get through to the same call centres. The network is the same too - so the only real difference is the charges and what is available.

You have definitely got a great deal there with the free line rental.

I thought I was getting a good deal at £7.25 per month for Essentials and Fibre (+ line rental), but will need to try for free line rental when my renewal is due !
