Made with water, a little salt and sugar. Microwaved for 2 minutes, a little milk added and put in the freezer for 5 minutes to cool it enough to eat.

  • I eat porridge raw and uncooked. I also don't like milk so I make mine with cold water and then add fruit or honey.

    I have porridge most mornings.
I do a big spoon of porridge; big spoon of dried mixed raisins; big spoon wheatbran; handfull of bran flakes, then sit 2 weetabix on top, then cold milk. You don't need any sugar 'cos you get the sweetness of the raisins and wheatbran.

I stir a little honey into the pan while I'm making the porridge.

Adding fruit to your porridge will not only provide important vitamins and minerals but will also add more taste and variety to your breakfast throughout the week. Try adding baked or sliced banana or other fresh fruit like strawberries, cranberries and blueberries which are nice too. Even if you switch porridge with cereal or plain yoghurt you can still add fruit to make it healthier and tastier too. If you can't always get fresh fruit then frozen fruit is a good option. And if you're not big on fruit try spices like cinnamon to spruce up those oats!

How can you tell if oats are steel cut?

Which brands would I be looking for?

    Thanks
Steel cut is what oatmeal, as opposed to rolled oats, is called in America and now increasingly here. It's usually in pinhead (coarse) form, but you can get medium & fine too. I'm not allowed to post links, but you can get more info if you Google.

The brand we get around here is Alford, and I see Hamlyns listed on My Supermarket for the major stores, your local health food store will have others.

I'm not sure it's any better for you, I just prefer the texture :)

I like mine soaked overnight too, with salt & boiling water.
Then microwaved in the morning & served with sweetner mixed in, chopped bananas & a splash of skimmed milk.

So many great ideas! I usually just have mine plain or with a bit of honey or berries, but now I'm going to try out the carrot cake one and the tahini one and the Scandinavian one and probably a few others!

Tomorrow I'm going to try it with some ground almonds and a drop of vanilla essence because that's what I've got in my cupboards and it feels like it's worth a try.

Occasionally I'll make 'carrot cake' porridge - oats, milk, some grated carrot, spices, sultanas and nuts, soaked overnight and then cooked. That's really nice with some Greek yogurt on the top. I also like 'gingerbread' porridge - oats, milk, tiny bit of treacle, spices, some chopped apple and some sultanas.
Those both sound amazing, what brilliant ideas. I might attempt the carrot cake one for my breakfast tomorrow :)
