What about getting some cheap, large throws to put on whatever sofa you buy to protect it from everyday spills, food crumbs etc?

It would also help make the sofa last a bit longer.

The ones we were given cats had used as a a rating post.

a nice thing about washable covers is a good wash with something scented and the room smells amazing.

Years ago our cats (not the same 2 we have now!) used our material ones as a scratching post :( The cats haven't touched our leather ones though, they use a very hard wearing runner I have in the hall :D The next sofa I get (if I do, these ones seem everlasting ) will have those reclining thingios on it though, whatever material it's made of! :)
  • Thanks for the replies so far!

It looks like my thought on cord was right....I did think it wouldn't be very hard wearing but thought I'd ask in case I was wrong (has been known to happen in the rare occasion ;) lol).

My main reason for not liking leather is I don't like the feel of it and then there is the cold in winter and the being stuck to it in summer. A family member has leather corner sofa which has not even been subjected to young children and hasn't worn well.

I don't "let" the children eat on the sofas but occasionally I catch them with biscuits and drinks on it. 😟 To be honest its the toddler with "those" sticky hands that I am thinking of.

The sofas I have now are normal material type and have had them over 6 years and bless the sofa and chair have done us well. We now need more seating and less broken in sofas. I'm ashamed to admit it but the frame is so broken we are nearly sitting on the floor if we are not falling into the sofa...lol 😳

I'm going to subscribe to this as I'm in much the same position.

I want new sofas and I don't like leather either. I find leather a bit institutional looking/feeling and reminds me of a waiting room.

The pair of sofas we have are 20+ years old, were hand made and expensive and on second set of loose covers. I could have new covers and would need new seat cushions as the existing (feather) ones are too flat now. So I've decided Id like a change but what??

Dilemma is do I go for expensive and expect to last for years or cheap and expect to change in a shortish time. Having looked around I am impressed with Ikea. I have one of their sofas in conservatory and while it doesn't get daily wear, it's doing fine after 15+ years.

I had fancied bright pink cord at SofaSofa but think I'd get bored with it and I do understand where people are coming from who say it could flatten. I've seen it happen with cord trousers. My existing ones are cream but I'd only consider a pale colour with washable covers. I like the Ikea corner ones but I think they'd fill the room.

So to answer OP: I quite understand why you don't want leather but I'd be inclined to go for something with washable, fabric covers. I think the line I'm looking at is Ektorp

Yep, DEFINITELY the kind of person I was on about in my first post. :rotfl:

The opinionated and obnoxious 'I don't CARE what you want, my idea is better' brigade.

    Most irksome. :p

Your last paragraph is just a ridiculous euphemism BTW and is in no way similar to the original issue in the OP.

Oh and by the way, I wasn't 'shouting,' I was trying to point out that the OP does not want leather. Because despite her saying this, people are still saying 'go for leather!' ;)

I'm guessing you don't know what a euphemism is?

Dralon - I had a Dralon suite for about 10 years and it cleaned up beautifully with just a damp sponge. the velvet like pile would then stand up nicely too and it looked so good when we changed suites my DD begged for it and she had it about 5 years before passing it on to someone.
I have a leather one now - and where the cat jumps on and off it - it shows scratch marks.
  • GET LEATHER !

    No don't - only joking.

Did leather sofas , you slip about when it's cold and stick when it's hot. Not my faves, though it worked well with my attempt at stylish minimalism !

Cord just makes me think how beautifully toddler vomit will stick in that lovely texture.

Loose (washable) covers sound wonderful but remember that all things wear out and need to be replaced.

I went down the get a posh well made sofa and then have it recovered in future route. Excellent except it costs way more to have it recovered than buy a good new sofa.

They're a lot of money so it's good to take your time and be happy with your decision.

I have a cord corner sofa that I bought nearly 4 years ago. Its not perfect but considering I have a small dog that lives on it, a very messy husband and two adult children, it's worn very well. I love it. Its every comfortable and works for us. I appreciate it won't last forever but I'd rather have a good fabric sofa than a cheap leather one! (Had to mention leather at some point in my post...)

I would get what you like and then spend a little more on some large throws to cover it with and you can chuck them in the washing machine when they get grubby.

I would go with this. The best sofa I had was green dralon 4th hand, some ones grans, their brothers, theirs, then mine. I actually had two but moving in with someone meant I got rid of the first one, so old it didn't have a fire safety label. The second one (when we split up) was 4th hand too, it needed those sofa boards but they were cheap.

Got it into my head I wanted a new sofa and cream leather was the in thing in 2004. Still sitting on it, but no where near as comfy as those old green sofas, narrow seat pads, low back, but still BIG and takes up loads of room. Cold in winter, hard to clean. Not snuggly at all, you could sleep on the old sofas but not this leather one. My favourite spot to sit look a mess, the two seater which rarely gets used looks like the day it was delivered.
