She. does. not. want. leather.
Earth to MSE posters:
She. does. not. want. LEATHER.
Alright Peter! Calm down! :rotfl:
She might have said no leather, but she also asked for opinions from people, and that is what she is getting....like it or not!
With 3 kids about, it's hard to think of a more hard wearing easy to clean material than leather. She may not like it, and asked people not to suggest it, but people are just giving their own experiences of what they know to be a long lasting material. No one is trying to 'peddle' it, we don't (as far as I know!) work for a well known sofa retailer.0 -
My sister has had a cord suite for over 10 years. It's cream. Admittedly she's got no kids or animals and she's OCD but it hasn't any worn or frayed spots at all. It has fixed covers too!!! Not sure if buy one for my messy household, but just to add another POV!!Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0

No need to shout. We heard you.
If a poster says they want to do a stupid thing and do not want to do a sensible alternative it is, as far as I can see, perfectly acceptable to point out that they might like to consider the sensible thing a bit more.
If the question had been 'Should I jump in front of a bus or a train, those are the only options I will consider' would you be as quick to shout down those saying 'think about not jumping'?
Yep, DEFINITELY the kind of person I was on about in my first post. :rotfl:
The opinionated and obnoxious 'I don't CARE what you want, my idea is better' brigade.
Most irksome.
Your last paragraph is just a ridiculous euphemism BTW and is in no way similar to the original issue in the OP.
Oh and by the way, I wasn't 'shouting,' I was trying to point out that the OP does not want leather. Because despite her saying this, people are still saying 'go for leather!'You didn't, did you? :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Whatever you get make it a mid to dark mixy pattern, and have removeable washable covers, best idea, get a good quality second hand suite off ebay until your kids leave home.....0

FWIW, I'm with you Peter.
OP, you get hard wearing cord and not so hard wearing cord. If it's the softer type, it will flatten and wear fairly quickly. The tougher more 'needle' cord type will wear well but probably wont be as comfy or soft to sit on as it's a rougher material by nature.
I'd also offer the opinion that a budget cord sofa from a cheap store will likely be style over substance, i.e. it will look lovely initially but just wont last any length of time.Herman - MP for all!0 -
And obviously stop your kids eating and drinking on the settee....0

We binned some gifted leather sofas this year, they lasted two years.
Our upholstered sofas are Victorian, Edwardian, sometime in the eighties, and some in the 00s.
I have double quilts ( quilts as opposed to duvets) I chuck over them when very young children are visiting or work is going on in the house ( they did live on the sofas and come off, but I'm trying to reverse the situation more as we don't have children of our own.
I love the cushion covers on the younger sofas that we can put in the washing machine. I would not swap them for leather for anything.
I love leather as a material, I am a traditionalist when it comes to leather for saddlery etc, but good basic traditional shape sofas can be reupholstered for ever looking good and easily cleaned and protected. I'd buy a good second hand sofa and spend and money covering it to my own taste.0 -

It might help if folk knew why she doesn't want leather? I'm another fan of leather, no kids now, but do have 2 cats, that tend to sleep where they want, and a good wipe gets rid of muddy paw marks sharpish! Also if anything is spilled on it, a wipe will suffice, rather than flaffing around taking the covers off.

You can actually get some good quality cord sofas, and if they are all cord, rather than just the trim (as Peter said,) they can be very hard-wearing and durable. And they aren't too expensive either I don't think. I think you would just get them fraying and suchlike, if you bought a very cheap one, or one second hand.
Leather is hard wearing of course, but also has its negatives, which have been pointed out, and it's a bit more high maintenance. And of course the OP said she doesn't want it anyway lol.

a nice thing about washable covers is a good wash with something scented and the room smells amazing.0
