test driving a sorn car

Bob read the (whole) thread. It is taxed until September. SORN is not declared.
Then the OP needs to get it SORNd now, before they get a IAL (Insurance Advisory Letter) followed, in short order, by a £100 FPN, and/or vehicle seizure, and/or a court prosecution, with a maximum fine of £1,000.0 -
Is it really that difficult to understand the concept of SORN, and the fact that you cannot drive an uninsured vehicle on the road, no matter how many other vehicles you are insured to drive.
If a car is declared SORN, then it is not taxed, and therefore the only time that it may be driven on a road is to and from a place of MOT - as long as it is insured for that purpose.
I guess the only variable to the above, would be a person who owns trade plates and has motor traders insurance.0 -
for My first 10 years of driving I had insurance with general accident and it was an open policy which was great
the insurance document stated my name is insured to drive any vehicle that is owned loaned or hired to him, it was a fantastic policy that the supplier wanted rid of so they pushed the cost up every year and eventually it became to expensive and i had to go to a named vehicle policy0 -
One solution would be for your son to sorn his new car and keep using his old car until it sold0

You'll have a much harder time selling a SORN/uninsured car as well (test drives become impossible, most people don't want the hassle). Much easier to get it added onto your insurance as an overlapping spare car for a couple of weeks. I've always done that and it's usually only cost about £20/week.0

Let's assume SORN (Statutory Off-Road Notification) means you have to take one of the wheels off and put it in a shed until the car becomes taxed again, and insured, and MoTd. Now someone turns up and wants a test drive. They can't cos there's only three wheels on the car now. Simple :cool:0

Nice one! I like that :T0 -
Thanks so much lungboy. The car is taxed until September but researching on the Internet it says if it's not insured it has to be sorned and the tax handed in. As we all have insurance which covers us third party on other vehicles I just wondered whether this would be sufficient
This is NOT sufficient.
Such insurance only covers you if the car has insurance already in place - which you have said it does not.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -

I think you are reading old information - their is no 'handing in' or sending back anything at all now.
Where did you find this advice to hand the tax in?
VED 'tax' discs no longer exist - they are history - the act of declaring SORN will automatically cancel the VED and a refund of any unexpired months still to come is sent to the registered keeper.0 -

Doesn't that depend on whether that's a condition of the policy for DOC (e.g. in mine it isn't)? If it isn't the driver would be covered to drive but the keeper would be committing an offence?0
