test driving a sorn car

My son is selling his car. He's transferring his insurance to his new car & putting the car on the drive. How can he take people for a test drive? We all have third party cover for other vehicles. Will this cover us to take people out?

Sorn is to do with tax. You can't drive it while it is sorned unless to an MOT, so no test drives.

You can now pay for tax by monthly direct debit, so just start that then declare SORN when it's sold.

I'd keep the old car on the policy for the test drives, or ask people to insure it themselves for the day, though the latter is risky if they'll say they have driving other vehicles cover (as you have said).

One problem with driving other vehicles cover is it is third party only. Another is that it usually specifies the car must have its own policy anyway, which doesn't happen to cover this driver.
  • Car is fully taxed. We all have insurance on other vehicles would this cover us on test drives

It ain't sorn'd then. So needs to be insured.
  • I didn't think a vehicle could be taxed and SORN'ed at the same time?

  • Such drivers will no longer be able to put a car uninsured in the garage or parked off the road. In future they will have to contact the DVLA in Swansea, declare the car as "off the road" by filling in a statutory off road notification (Sorn)

Yes but you said it's taxed so it can't be on a SORN.

If the car is not insured it can't be test driven - simples!

What do you mean in future?

Going back to your sons car. It either needs to be taxed and insured or sorn, not any combination you decide on.

A car can be taxed and declared SORN, you haven't had your refund (yet). However declaring SORN means you can only drive the car to and from a booked MOT and your insurance on other cars is very unlikely to cover you, never mind a potential buyer, from test-driving a car you've told the government is off the road.
  • The OP never mentioned SORN in their original post. Tax is not the query, insurance is.
