Even if your insurance does specifically on the certificate allow 'driving other cars' if you read carefully it says not belonging to the insured - so it's only other peoples' cars - not other cars that you own.

Thanks so much lungboy. The car is taxed until September but researching on the Internet it says if it's not insured it has to be sorned and the tax handed in. As we all have insurance which covers us third party on other vehicles I just wondered whether this would be sufficient

No the car needs to be insured.
  • The OP never mentioned SORN in their original post. Tax is not the query, insurance is.

You don't read thread titles then? :D

Dave's an exception to most men. No brains in his trousers.
  • It ain't sorn'd then. So needs to be insured.

    That's correct.

Under CIE (Continuous Insurance Enforcement) Regulations, you can no longer keep an uninsured vehicle taxed.
I didn't think a vehicle could be taxed and SORN'ed at the same time?

    HBS x

    It can't.

If the car is uninsured, then it has to be SORNd, which will automatically cancel the VED.

Failing to SORN an uninsured vehicle, is a an offence.

    It's not taxed until September.

The moment you declare SORN, the VED is cancelled, and any complete months are automatically refunded to you.

You may still physically have a Licence Disc in the window, but it is no longer valid.

Instead of negative replies (obviously SORN is alien to me) has anyone got anything useful to suggest please, as obviously I'm trying to do everything legally & above board.

What i did with my last car was transfer my insurance to my new car and then when it came to selling the old car I rang the insurance company and added my old car to my insurance for a period of one week

this allowed me to take the car out for a test drive and I also delivered the car to the new owner

it cost me very little to add a second car to my insurance for a short period and could be the answer to your problem, give your insurance provider a ring and ask them if this is an option

Bob read the (whole) thread. It is taxed until September. SORN is not declared.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

the law has changed and the new legislation is called continuous insurance enforcement, this means if the car is taxed it needs to be insured

this states that If a vehicle is between registered keepers or registered as ‘in trade’ with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), it is excluded from continuous insurance enforcement.

if you are selling the car and not using it is it not between registered keepers even though it is not declared as in trade

    www.gov.uk/vehicle-insurance/uninsured-vehicles

to stay within the law you have to keep the car insured or put it off the road and declare sorn and cash in the tax
