No, the OP knew before that they should have had insurance (re-read their post). If the OP didn't know then I wouldn't have had any issue with them being told that - and I've told people the same in the past.

The post I read simply stated that they didn't have insurance unless you read something different. I'm assuming his mother bought the ticket and he's just discovered the lack of insurance. Still worth pointing out for others IMO.

I also don't think it's particularly necessary to lecture the OP about travel insurance. I think they're fully aware of that already!

    Well said.

I didn't say there was a lecture, I said lecturing.

It may be worth highlighting for others, but the phrasing seemed more along the lines of criticising them for not having it, despite them clearly knowing it was a mistake not to have it.

    I totally agree.
It's quite hypocrite to say "oh, I'm so sorry for you" and then attack from the other side.

Sorry. I'll go and buy a dictionary to help get a better understanding as to how lecturing isn't the delivery of a lecture.

You don't need a dictionary, you need just a bit of common sense!

    Hi Everyone,

My mum, who is 71, bought a non refundable ticket online in February this year for travel in November from a travel agent. The fight was with the operator Emirates. Sadly my mum has been diagnosed with stomach cancer about a month ago and will be will having a operation in November. Her doctor said that once she shows the letter confirming her operation to the travel agent she will get her £700 back. She does not have travel insurance to claim off either.

I have called the travel agent and explained the situation and they have asked me to contact Emirates directly. Once I contacted Emirates, they informed me that they are unable to talk to me and that I should get the travel agent to contact them directly. This back and forth went on for at least 2 weeks and I don't believe that the travel agent has even bothered to contact Emirates. The travel agent has turned round and stated that they cannot refund the money as the ticket was bought as a "non-refundable" ticket, but that they can make a good will gesture and pay back £70.

As you can imagine my mum is already very upset with her condition and the business with the travel agent is adding to her worries.

Is there anything that I can do to get part of the £700 back.

    Thank You

I'm not sure if this would help you ... just about 2-3 weeks ago my father passed away. I was on holiday with my wife in the US at that time.

I had a booking, through a travel agent (someone I know, not a company online), it was a British Airways flight and American Airlines was the company in charge of the booking ... sounds complex? maybe....

I had to change the flight by 1 day (leave back on Sunday instead of Monday) to get to the funeral ... both American Airlines & British Airways were cooperative ... they changed my flight (and my wife's) at no cost whatsoever, no taxes, nothing extra to pay ... initially the change fee for both of us should have been $420 so all of it was waived ... I only had to send the burial license which my brother scanned and sent me by email ... they took care of the rest and were nice about it ... I did have to wait over the phone a lot ... it was about 1 hour or so of several phone calls that needed to be made (including conference calls), but it got all sorted out.

So that's my experience - use it as you see fit.

Please try OP. My husband was diagnosed with cancer and major op done. We had holiday booked on Mont Blanc so had to cancel. No insurance but all the companies we had booked with gave us our money back, and easyjet gave us a voucher to use within twelve months. This was done four months prior to holiday date.

OP, I wouldn't fight it on the basis of trying to find arguements to any clause, I would just write directly to the company in your most humble style and say how much you would appreciate a gesture of goodwill in these circumstances.

I have been amazed at the things I managed to resolve in my favour taking that approach.

That's so true ... many people here tend to think only in a very sickening robotic way as if the rules are 'god' and the 'terms and conditions' are like a script written by the lord himself and anyone breaking those rules shall be punished and be left with shame, disgrace and humiliation for the rest of his life.

Sorry about the loss of your father.

For the passenger/family member it is common for airlines to take this approach regarding changes and the waiver of fees and not unusual for refunds on non refundable tickets to be allowed too with no fee and is clearly stated in the fare rules.

I say not unusual for refunds as with EK for instance under this eventuality they will allow a refund/change if your ticket originates in DXB but if you have a UK - DXB return ticket then your allowed to change it with no fee but no refund on a nonref ticket.

I'm afraid as far as a refund is concerned the OP is at the mercy of the airline.

Like many others you represent the case as if she's at the mercy of someone ... like common sense has no sense in this forum.

I had made a booking, with Hotwire, a company that clearly stated that their hot-price bookings are final, non-refundable, and non-changeable ... want to know what happened in the end?

And no one, no one from this forum seemed to bother to respond to this topic, because apparantely you guys are only good at "helping" people to pay more for things they might get without paying a single dime for ... is this really a money SAVING forum?! I know "spending" and "saving" start in the same letter, but how exactly you and others help people to SAVE here especially in the most crucial times like this? (I personally don't even bother to check the discounts for this and that, those discounts are not applying in crucial times and usually are not always real discounts! ... )
