Any links to that policy or which route and nonref class that applies to, just curious.

from the conditions of carriage if appears that if they class this as a Force Majeure then they may be able to get a credit for another flight booked within 12 months

  • Good luck with that claim I think Force Majeure refers to weather issues.
But anyway if the ticket is changeable and valid for 12 months then maybe something can be done regarding reissue.

I was more interested in the policy regarding refunds in the event of illness that some airline cover but not as far as I can see on EK UK - DXB routes at least or the more favourable DXB - UK rules.

I am also looking at the fare rules via a GDS.

    Struggling to see a lecture.

But it is worth highlighting the fact for other users of the site that insurance should be put in place at around the same time as booking.

I'd agree. Lots of people read these threads and if it can persuade just one more person to take out travel insurance it's worth it.

I think maybe I'd go into the travel agents at a quiet time and sit there while they called the airline.
  • Some airlines are actually quite amenable but only if booked through them.

agreed this is unlikely. The definition they use is
“Force Majeure” means unusual and unforeseen circumstances which you cannot control and the consequences of which cannot be avoided by your taking reasonable care.

but even if covered it is not going to get a refund

I didn't say there was a lecture, I said lecturing.

It may be worth highlighting for others, but the phrasing seemed more along the lines of criticising them for not having it, despite them clearly knowing it was a mistake not to have it.

Sorry. I'll go and buy a dictionary to help get a better understanding as to how lecturing isn't the delivery of a lecture.

Or you could just use Google. In case you genuinely don't know the difference, saying you're lecturing to someone can also mean you're basically talking down to them (for want of a better phrase - I don't think it's deliberate as such) - it doesn't necessitate giving a whole lecture.

The point is that the OP knows now that his mum should have had the insurance (from the day she started to book any element of the holiday), but the warning to others is that finding out when it's needed that you should have got it earlier just makes an already bad situation worse. So if more people can be made aware then the point is worth repeating.

OP, hope your mum's operation goes well, and try to persuade her not to worry about whether she gets the money back or not, it is only money after all.

No, the OP knew before that they should have had insurance (re-read their post). If the OP didn't know then I wouldn't have had any issue with them being told that - and I've told people the same in the past.
