Such a headache, really could do without this in the run up to christmas
It doesn't have to be not a headache. Previous posters are right - this is absolutely not your problem. Simply reply to your ex-landlord that you have no outstanding liability to EDF and state that you will no longer reply to his emails on this matter.
Then stop replying to the emails. He doesn't know where you live, so that will be the end of the matter.0 -
Don't reply to anything. You've said your piece.
Just ignore until you receive something from EDF (unlikely as they have issued a final bill) or debt collectors (unlikely as he is probably just trying to play hard man).
Even if debt collectors do contact you, there are means of dealing with them which will almost certainly be effective because this debt is disputed.0 -
"Dear Mr Landlord,
My contract was with EDF Energy. I have no contract for utilities with you or with your new tenants. EDF have told me I owe them nothing. If they change their mind they will contact me directly.
I will no longer reply to your emails on this matter. I am keeping a note of your emails and I will consider any further emails from you to be harrassment."
Something like that should do.0 -
Golly this sounds like a real situation - we have had it the other way around with the previous tenant not paying her bills - however we only told the landlord that he needs to provide a forwarding address for post and sent them on to her. He never did (don't blame him) so returned to sender.
We clearly wrote on our tenancy agreement the meter readings when we moved in - so you should remember this to protect yourself when you move into your next place.
Glad this all seems sorted not what you need so close to christmas.

I doubt the OP and her ex landlord will be swapping holiday snaps.

And any email client worth using will disable remote image loading by default except for senders on a white list.
The same technique is used by spammers to identify active email accounts.0 -

No it doesn't. Read Notify asks the receiving email client to send a notification when the email is opened. The client may decline to do so.
Other tracking techniques do use invisible images. Those techniques require the use of a web server to serve the images, and log the request and cross-reference it to the mail. Very common with bulk mailings, both legitimate and spam, but unlikely with one-off mailings between individuals.Eco Miser

If new tenant believes they are paying to much they should give supplier proof of meter reading when they moved in, for all OP or new tenant knows the landlord could have repainted flat and had 20 fan heaters on full blast for 3 days to dry paint.
Completely agree with everyone else that any payment if due should be requested by and paid only to supplier0 -
urgh
He emailed me again yesterday saying that he worked out how much the standing charges and nominal usage would be and that i owe him £80-ish (funny it was £50 the other day)and hope I will do the right thing.
I've not replied to any of this, it's very irritating.
I made it 100% if EDF got in touch and told me I owe then i would pay them and only them and he is trying this on STILL.
I am doing the right thing - ignoring this con-artist.
He is not a poor man, and trying to con me out of money is a bloody low and shows what a crook he really is. Shame as he was an excellent landlord and seemed like a decent bloke.
It was up to him to contest that amount for the bill with EDF and they would have sorted any errors out and got hold of me for any owed money so he can do one!0 -

Dear ex LL,
I have indulged your delusions for some time now, but patience has worn thin.
I reiterate to you that we have no contract, I owe you nothing, legally or morally. I have 'done the right thing' by settling my accounts with the respective providers.
I must now warn you that any more communication from you will be deemed harassment and reported to the police.
Take care
