OK so we all know countless people can't use you're and your. Don't get me started on their and they're and there.

But I have noticed, especially on the MSE forums, the creeping misuse of advice and advise. Is it really so difficult?

I'm sure these people can say the word out loud properly - I've never heard anyone say "I'd like some advise".

Not sure if I blame teachers or the advent of spell checkers that aren't sense checkers.

    Don`t be so pompous!

If I spot these sort of errors, and I probably don't every time as I tend to skim posts rather than scrutinise them, they grate. I never make a comment about them though as sod's law says I'll make a typo in it....

Be honest now. How many times did you proof read your post before hitting the "submit reply" tab to make sure that it was error free?

I know that when I occasionally comment on grammar or spelling, I normally double or treble check to make sure that it's 100% correct before submitting (and sometimes still miss an error!).

Just part of the general decline (some would claim progress or evolution) in the English language. For those who don't notice, it doesn't matter, but it interrupts someone's concentration if they do notice. It's the difference between a CV in the bin or a CV on the interview pile.

It's not always just jobseekers who have trouble with spelling and grammar.
