Tried the vinegar idea today and now my dishwasher looks sparkly and smells fresh. Thanks everyone.

I apologise if this is a stupid question, but do you just use normal vinegar that you would put on your chips?!

I can only imagine this making it smell horrid!!

    Thanks

yeah normal vinegar. I use white though and a slice of lemon in a dish in the top for a nice scent. You don't actually smell the vinegar so its really worth keeping some in the house. I HATE vinegar but have it for cleaning

I normally clean it out then put in two lemon halves in the cutlery section for a wash it removes smells and stuff and leaves it sparkling clean :)

I used to use lemon freshener gel sachets.
They worked but can become expensive over time.
Lakeland started to sell a stainless steel 'plate' that went in the cutlery box. Which were very expensive.
This must work on the same principle as the stainless steel tablet the is sold to remove odours from hands, ie after preparing fish etc.
I had one of these but it wasn't used for its intended purpose so I put that in the cutlery box of the dishwasher - NO SMELLS SINCE.
    That was two years ago.:T

A box of citric acid will do the trick. Fill the detergent compartment with it and pour the rest of the box into the base of the dishwasher. Much cheaper than dedicated 'Dishwasher Cleaners' and does just as good a job.

Here's some online if you can't find it locally: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dri-Pak-Clean-Natural-Citric-Acid-6-Packets-/260634752259?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_HomeGarden_CLV_Cleaning_CA&hash=item3caf0ab503
