How not to join a motorway!

  • The car was at fault but the driver of the lorry should have slowed down when the car was veering into his lane. The lack of action to prevent the accident is almost as bad as causing it.

Quite obviously most of the folks who have posted on this thread have never driven a truck or even been a passenger in one.

It's like asking the captain of a massive container ship to give way to a weekend sailor in a dingy who is claiming that 'steam gives way to sail'.

The car driver was a !!!! - pure and simple.

From the video all we know for certain is that the car could have avoided this, they had options.
We can't see whether the lorry could have changed lanes, or safely slowed down - you often have another lorry inches from your bumper.
Indeed trying to increase the gap behind may have been the reason he was less than 2 seconds from lorry in front.
    We don't know.

Or, could have just had a gutful of idiots in cars not getting on with it....

Would like to think having a camera filming this, driver would have taken avoiding action if at all possible.

Driven and ridden in them, and totally agree that the car driver was a load of punctuation.

But, for the lorry driver, opening the gap gently to be sure there's space for the idiot he (should) know is coming up his inside with no lane ahead takes nothing, but might inconvenience him a bit getting back up to the limiter.

Wouldn't have inconvenienced him half as much as this did, though, would it?

Depends if the artic an inch from his bumper noticed before he hit him I suppose.

    Have another look.

No one in lane 2 until he's on the hard shoulder. Given the fact he's losing speed I'd say maybe he could hand moved over and definitely as he approached with vehicles joining.

No he doesn't have to but why do trucks join on the horn and flashing their lights if you don't?

Maybe a car was coming up fast and changed into lane 3 at the last second.
Anyway give way applies to car, and a vehicle limited to 56 max shouldn't have to move over (and is under no obligation to) for a vehicle that can easily match or exceed this speed.

I don't care, car came off worse, usually do :)

I have noticed that a lot of drivers now have trouble joining motorways as they are too fat. Certainly too fat to be able to turn and look over their shoulder but many seem unable to turn their heads even 15 degrees so join looking straight ahead only, in the blind faith that whatever might be there already will get out of their way. Those are the days I wish I was in a Challenger tank and would be able to offer them the 55 tonne diet plan.

Its the mentality of british drivers these days, someone pulls out of a junction and gets T boned, it wasn't his fault he pulled out into flow of traffic the guy who t boned him was because he was travelling 2MPH over the limit, had he not travelled 2 mph over the limit then he would have stopped. not my fault I reversed into him, its the guy I hit because if he didn't stop and just went round me I wouldn't have hit him.
  • Capitan Cod - That is a total exaggeration.
Firstly - you don't know how big the truck was but a 11 ton truck should have 2-3x stopping distance of a car.
Secondly - trucks come with brakes which can be applied much harder than what was used.
Thirdly - The truck driver should have slowed down when the car approached him to put more distance between him and the truck in front - he didn't do this because he was probably asleep.

I have been in trucks and have driven them - the driver of the truck could have clearly avoided this situation.
