DIY... less than a fiver.
hate it when people exxagerate how cheap diy is.
oil change, tenner
brake change, tenner
car wash, free
brake fluid is the most expensive fluid on a car and if you're properly disposing the harmful chemical at a chemical bank it would cost you more than a fiver on disposal alone.
i guess you're the type that just tosses it in the bin after youre done.0 -

But the garage will just laugh at him when he pulls up in his little tykes push car asking for his brakes to be changed.0 -
Jaydeeuk, grow up...
Okay I have an update. For now I will not attempt to do it myself, I would rather witness someone first hand then try myself at a later stage when I have a little more knowledge. For now I will just stick with DIY oil chage and oil filter using syphon for my Audi. Unfortunately the oil filter is underneath the car so syphoning would be pointless. I thought I'd attempt this myself, but would rather let the garage do it with the brake fluid change. Once I have some time to look into trolley jacks and axle stands I'll try it later down the line...
Did a bit of price searching and Toyota main dealer (Edgware Rd, London) actually came out pretty cheap. After some haggling they agreed with £39 for the brake fluid change, £70 for the oil change and filter and £50 for the wheel alignment. All include VAT and labour.
I knew I could still get it for cheaper, so I tried all the local 'smaller' independent garages that cater for all cars and makes. I tried a place called Harrow Service Centre (http://www.harrowservice.co.uk/) and they are a complete rip off!!! I would have thought they should at least be cheaper than the main dealers but apparently not.
They initally wanted to charge £130 plus VAT for an oil change, £60 plus VAT for brake fluid change and £40 plus VAT for front wheel alignment, bring the total to £276!! All for a 1 litre Yaris!
I pointed out to them that Toyota main dealers, as part of their fixed rate servicing, charge £125 for an"intermidiate" service, plus an additional £39 for the brake fluid change and £50 for the front wheel alignment. (all including labour and VAT ) And this was the price before I even negotiated with Toyota!
I also mentioned that £130 plus VAT for an oil change for a 1 litre Yaris is the same I pay for a 6 cylinder BMW with twice the oil capacity and higher oil grade. Long story short, Harrow Service said the best they could do was £240 inc VAT and labour. Still absolutely ridiculous as its more than the original "standard rate" if the Toyota main dealers.
Anywho, I found another smaller garage who said he'll do the oil change, brake fluid and alignment all for £120 total.0 -

I guess you're the type that jumps to (incorrect) conclusions and didn't pay enough attention in your English lessons.0 -

Your comment on 'didn't pay enough attention to your English lessons,' is rather uncalled for. I found his post perfectly understandable and he made a minor spelling mistake with the word 'exaggerate.' Big deal, his style of writing was pretty informal anyway.0 -

It's what he posts rather than how he posts it.

You are the only poster on this board that posts more crap! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Not unless I'm making a special trip to the waste recycling centre.0 -

Whatever. The post he quoted was intended to be helpful to the OP, you, but he saw fit to question the accuracy of my costs and concluded with an unnecessary slur.
Anybody that thinks brake fluid is the most expensive fluid on the car to buy, is obviously deluded. Excluding my time, my diy costs for a brake fluid change are actually less than £3. In addition, many local council run waste recycling centres, including mine, accept it for disposal with no fee.Brake fluid can be taken to any Household Waste Recycling Centre. Please dispose of in the engine/motor oil container.0 -

You need to pay for special hazardous waste collection for brake fluid. Some idiot on another motoring forum suggested mixing dot4 brake fluid in engine oil and dropping it into the oil bank, potentially contaminating their entire vat.
Brake fluid is a corrosive substance and your average waste recycling centre do not take these.
Your council may have different facilities.0
