We know it was a supermarket, that could be one of hundreds of chains, so you have no idea whether that's the case. And also with alcohol staff do *not* always have that discretion. I see no reason why DVDs might not get caught in a similar system.0 -

Hundreds of chains of supermarkets? Really?
If you know it's a supermarket why are you twittering on about your job and bar staff and glass collectors?
You clearly have no experience working in a supermarket, so probs best you stop making yourself look any more foolish.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

Yes to the first question, I can find over 100 shops/chains which call themselves supermarkets in London alone by a quick Google search.
I'm afraid supermarkets do have systems in place which require a supervisor to approve a sale. Those systems often cover more products than they legally need to. I can add no more because I don't believe a cashier is thick for doing what they have been told to do. We don't know why a supervisor didn't intervene in this sale as yet.
But I've explained why I don't think it is possible to assume a cashier is thick, you can think what you like, that's fair enough.0 -
From the cashier's point of view:
Option 1: follow the policy.
Pros: won't lose job
Cons: none
Option 2: don't follow the policy
Pros: none
Cons: might lose job
Only a thick cashier would breach the policy, not follow it.0 -
I have a feeling from information that I've just been told that this is Asda. I'm hoping that the OP can confirm0
-
So, say the cashier was following a policy? The cashier isn't thick then, the person who created that policy is thick.0

Yes, this is why I don't believe we have enough information to be sure that the cashier was "thick".
Personally I just don't like staff being called thick when it often isn't their fault at all.0 -

The fact you believe these are the only two options the cashier would think they had, supports the argument of people who think the cashier was thick.....0 -

The cashier couldn't use her common sense to realise that a U cert DVD is an age related sale item. Not the brightest spark.
It isn't policy to mark U DVD's as age related, it was an error on the system.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

In which case, Asda colleagues do not have to call a supervisor for every age related sale. The cashier could have used her common sense and just pressed the 'id accepted' button and legally sold the DVD that had been erroneously marked on the system as an age related sale.
Like I said at the beginning.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
