Refused to buy a U cert DVD as had no ID

My friend - 27 bought a U cert Peabody and Sherman dvd for her nephew's birthday. The cashier asked her for ID, which she didn't have at the time.
She said to the cashier that U means Universal for all
She tried to buy the DVD in a supermarket and when the DVD was scanned the think 25 prompt came up.
My friends that work in supermarkets only challenge customers if they are buying 15 or 18 cert DVDs and on computer games the PEGI ratings of 16 and 18.
U means anyone could buy it - even a 5 year old with their birthday money.
Why would this thick cashier refuse the sale of something even there is legally no min age to buy a U cert DVD.?

If the think 25 came up, it was probably out of the cashiers hands. They may have to do the challenge as part of their job, even if it's ridiculous to do so.0

One thing that was drummed into us when I worked as a cashier: Once you issue an ID challenge and the person has ID you are told not to go through with it no matter how stupid the product is that is being IDed.
Cashier isn't thick but wants to keep her damn job. If you disagree next time ask her to call over a manager to overrule if she doesn't herself.
I'm not saying that this isn't a stupid situation. However the way they train cashiers about ID checks is through fear "its your job gone, you could get a criminal record and fines". Actually giving them decent training on when its safe to overrule ID checks doesn't get done.0 -

People aren't necessarily thick because they do something which might not make logical sense to you. As others have noted it's likely a quirk in the till system which they probably have no control over, not some intellectual failing on their behalf.0 -

No I agree with the OP that they were thick.
It's a U dvd which means anyone can buy it. The till may flash the message up but anyone with a bit of intelligence would have just clicked the accept button.
It's this sort of lack of initiative that will doom the cashier to a life permanently in the minimum wage sector.0 -

Not necessarily, some retail stores ban their staff from over-riding anything for any reason. It's nothing to do with how "thick" a staff member is and often more to do with how the tills are set up. What they earn is irrelevant.0 -
It used to pop up on all DVDs when I worked in Sainsburys but we were just told to use our common sense with U and PG. Only 15 and 18 needed Think 25 applied.0

It's not an override they just need to click the customer is over 25 to get past the warning message.
The fact the staff manager did not have the intelligence to solve this problem is why they will be doomed to a low level job with little chance of advancement. If you can't resolve something as basic as this to the customers satisfaction, what chance would they have with something serious?0 -

The OP hasn't mentioned the manager, only the cashier. It is the cashier who may not have any discretion at all and that is the fault of the system, lack of supervisor, etc. There's no possible link between the cashier being thick, they might have quite likely wanted to have approved it. Someone's wage is entirely irrelevant to this.
There is a problem the other way with IDs as well for alcohol. Occasionally there are reports when 70 year olds are refused permission to buy alcohol because the staff member has been banned from serving anyone who doesn't have ID. The reason is often there is a till prompt which the staff member can't bypass. Again that isn't necessarily staff stupidity (although it might be), it's a failing somewhere in the system or in training.0 -

Yeah sorry manager was an typo.
But you're not getting the point that it's not a restricted product. If they were buying something restricted then that's fair enough. It was a U dvd.
Also of course they can bypass a warning. Otherwise they could never sell a product that was restricted. The message says "is the person clearly over 25?" You just click yes if they are or ask for id and then click yes if they have some. These steps are not necessary if the customer is buying a none restricted product.
It's so unbelievable stupid from the cashier that it's baffling anyone can think they were in the right and did nothing wrong!0 -

I would consider it an intellectual failing if they can't make a distinction between a quirk in the till system and a genuine need for ID.
To refuse point blank to sell it was ridiculous, they should have at least called as supervisor over to tell them that the film had an incorrect restriction on it even if they weren't willing to just press the button themselves to proceed with the sale.
This really was a case of 'computer says nooo'.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
