Yep, late 18th century. The Regency was roughly 1810-1820. The Prince Regent later became George IV.

Soz for the history lesson. :o

OK we had a Prince called Regent who was around in 1810 - 1820 who had a period of time named after him?

I love white bread triangular egg & onion sandwiches that you get at older people gatherings - best ones are at funerals. Sandwiches are usually a bit soggy too with clumps of onions and served with weak tea (hate that). Slightly concerning that I like these so much seeing as they sound so completely disgusting. But I do, can't be helped. Old age oddity, perhaps?:)

Funeral teas - that's another thing disappearing from society. :(

Really? I don't think this is the case.

I think it depends on areas. In Belfast and the east there are places where it's dying out. The further west you come the more likely people are to be traditional. I was at a funeral two months ago however and there was no funeral tea. Nor is that the first time.

Personally I think they are an essential part of helping someone cope with grief.

I agree, if you ever watch Cornation Street, whenever someone dies and the familiy is grieving, the first thing that they are offered is a cup of tea.

Ah but that's different to a funeral tea. When my father-in-law died I arranged a tea in a hostelry near his home so his friends, relatives and former comrades could come and chat. I think it helped my wife and her sister cope because they were distracted from their grief for those couple of hours. I'm sure I advertised the fact in the death notice in the Edinburgh Evening News too.
