This is not Sweden! Winter tyres are not required, how did we all manage from 1898 until the last year or two?

well in answer to that I would say that in 1898 not many people owned a car so no problem there then

and modern winter tyres aren't just for driving in snow the clue is in the name winter tyres, once the temperature drops below 7 deg C the winter tyres come into their own

one of the biggest problems with running winter tyres is the frustration caused when you get stuck behind a line of dinosaurs that spend all their time on forums saying you don't need winter tyres in this country its not like sweden you know, and i don't need winter tyres because i am a good driver, I dont care how good a driver you are and how many advance driving courses you have been on when you have no grip you ain't going nowhere

we live in a rural area and when it snows the council try their best and clear the main trunk roads but most of the other roads are untreated and unless you want to to be stuck then I feel that winter tyres are the right choice for me

I see your point and wonder why the emergency services don't use them. Police encourage the use of 4x4s in bad weather but run the same tyres all year round.

again around here most of the Police vehicles are off road type vehicles and are mostly fitted with all terrain tyres, not a full winter tyre but better than a summer tyre on a 4x4

And yes I know some will say the 'problem' has only come up since new cars have ever-wider rims and tyres, but I would postulate that the £500 or £1000 that a set of wheels & tyres will cost is better spent on some advanced driving lessons. Unless you drive a Beemer in which case you can get the winter tyres and continue to drive like someone who believes they are immortal and infallible ;-)

Well, when people first started driving seatbelts were not required, and traction control, ABS and airbags hadn't even been invented.

I'm sure you'll agree that these safety features are worth having.
Also, the £500 or £1000 will make your summer tyres last twice as long, effectively making them free, so you only have to pay for the cost of the alloys, which can be sold afterwards again lowering the cost. The main issue is storing the other set of wheels when not in use.

I also live in a rural area, I drive 30000 miles a year ,I have never had winter tyres on and never been stuck...well only behind those drivers you mention in your post.

Not saying they arent a good idea maybe they are, just not sure they are worth it

i have driven nearly every day for the last 30 years in the uk, never used or brought different tyres for winter or summer use, spend your money on some sort of advanced driving course and learn some new driving techniques if you can't manage a little bit of snow for a few weeks every year, itll be a one of cost and pay dividends (or you could put some more money in the coffers of a corporation)

I never realised theses advanced driving courses taught defying the laws of physics.
Try a rwd car with 275 width tyres, no course can sort that out.
Wasn't that long ago most cars had 155 width tyres, 235 is pretty average now unless you're running some eco car or an old shed.

I am convinced that the majority of people who say they/we don't need winter tyres in this country have never experienced the amazing difference they make throughout the Winter.

They also don't seem to have taken on board that they are Winter tyres meant to give better grip at low temperatures - not just for actual snow covered surfaces.

I've been driving longer than you and used to be of the same opinion until I drove a new car over 500 miles on snow, fresh and hard packed, without it ever putting a foot wrong. I witnessed at least half a dozen other motorists come to grief in their front wheel drive hatchbacks. I managed to do a hill start in a two ton rwd car that a 4x4 in front of me failed and slithered into the ditch. The reason, as I found out later, was the all season tyres the manufacturer had seen fit to mount on the rims.

They really do make a difference. Full blown winter tyres more so.

I am not here to trade insults with you, but you clearly do not understand how to exploit grip in difficult circumstances.
