Yup - we need to watch out guys - jonesy has us completely sussed out.
We know nothing - I'm pretty embarrassed about it actually.
For example until he put me right I thought a BMW X3 was a 4x4 - apparently despite all the BMW publicity and reviews in the What Car and Autotrader 4x4 sections the X3 is just a car that happens to be 4 wheel drive.
Thank goodness he's here to keep us all right about tyres, brakes and all sorts of other nonsense mistakes we might make.0 -
If I could chose one set of tyres to run year round I would choose winter tyres because they are by far the safest option
if i could not have winter tyres then i would go for a four season tyre, but i would not go back to running so called summer tyres year round
winter tyres are much safer in summer than summer tyres are in winter
and to say stopping 30 metres shorter is pretty pointless is priceless
Have you read what happens to the grip, braking capabilities and endurance of winter tyres on dry, over 7 degree roads?
Even in winter some days are dry and above 7. It's laughable you'd advocate driving in summer on them too. You're basically advocating driving around on 4 expensive follies which for the majority of the time are inappropriate for our climate.
stop trying to kid yourself and others you haven't wasted your money.0 -

No need to be rude jonesy - I meant every word of it. I don't know what we'd do without you to keep us right.
It's not just me you have put on the right road - there was the guy who in your 3rd post on the forum you told had made "a complete @rsehole of a response"
We've been needing someone like you on here for ages.
Thank you for your words of wisdom.0 -

this is info taken from the continental tyre websiteIf you are reluctant to change tyres and have nowhere to store summer tyres when they are not in use, you are better off using winter tyres all year round.
Winter tyres are as quiet and comfortable as summer tyres and, thanks to sophisticated compound technology, do not wear any more quickly.
There is a slight trade off with stopping distances as a winter tyre does not stop as quickly in the dry as a summer tyre, however, on balance if it is not possible to switch tyres in the winter, experts say you are better off with winter tyres all year round. This is because the difference in stopping distances of summer tyres in winter is far greater than for winter tyres in the summer.

I know who i would tend to believe and it is not you, yes winter tyres used in the summer do have a downside but it is nowhere near as big as the downside of using summer tyres in the winter0 -

Are more grip and braking power better? Yes, of course.
Does the average motorist need them? Of course not. We'd all be crashing and burning at every corner ever day otherwise. As much as you are trying to convince yourself otherwise, motoring is a pretty straightforward activity, managed perfectly well on standard tyres/brakes /everything.
Of course we don't need winter tyres, but why wouldn't you want them? Would you drive a car without seatbelts, airbags, ABS etc (if such a vehicle could be driven legally)?
Or would you choose the modern one with all the safety features?
It makes no sense whatsoever to do without winter tyres without a very good reason.0 -

Hark at a comment like that from the bloke with over 300 posts of arguing for the sake of arguing!
I was out actually, just watching a bit of TV before bed and having a browse now. I'm afraid we don't all spend our every waking minute arguing the toss on here doc
Some info about the drawbacks of winter tyres in summer:

Big lol at the guy who posted evidence that expensive winter tyres are great all year from a tyre manufacturers website!
Sorry lads - unless you're highland farmers or Yorkshire gamekeepers you're absolute mugs to a man buying these things!0
