Anyone know West Yorkshire (Leeds in particular) well?

I'd suggest spreading your search out a bit from the city area. Lots of places within an easy rail commute to central Leeds and decent properties within your range. A new railway station will open next year in Apperley Bridge which is Bradford but closer to Yeadon/Guiseley. Will take about 10 minutes to the city centre by rail.

That's interesting, Esmy. I had no idea this was going ahead, so thank you for mentioning it. I've just taken a look at the plans and it will be very advantageous for residents in that area. However, where did you get the 10 minutes to the city centre from? I can't find that info anywhere. The site for the proposed new station will be approx 1/3 further (perhaps a bit more) out of Leeds city centre than Horsforth station. It takes trains 17 minutes to travel from Horsforth to Leeds, so I estimate trains from Apperley Bridge will take around 25 minutes. Still, significantly quicker than a bus from that far out!

Spirit, as previously mentioned, if easy access to the University campuses is important, areas such as Cookridge, Weetwood, Far Headingley and Adel would be best. They are all well to do areas of Leeds and on direct bus routes to the University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett University, Leeds Beckett's Headingley campus, and they are on the same side of Leeds as Trinity University. Cookridge, by and large, has a somewhat rural sleepy vibe to it, mainly consisting of young families and retired folk (lots of bungalows!) The other areas have a bit more life to them, maybe as they are marginally closer to the centres of Headingley and Leeds. Depends on what you are after. Do take a walk around them all next time you are in the area.

Currently Leeds to Guiseley is about 14 minutes, so 10-12 mins for Apperley Brdge is probably about right.
Leeds-Horsforth although closer stops at 2 stations in between, where as Leeds-Guiseley currently, and Leeds-Apperley Bridge in the future will have no inbetween stations

Thanks Kathrynha. Will trains from Apperley Bridge not stop at the forthcoming Kirkstall Forge station before arriving at Leeds station? They will be on the same line, surely?

    Good point :)

2nd stop of journey would still be quicker than Horsforth's 3rd stop though.

Back to your snow question. We do generally get more snow than down south, but it is very hit and miss. Last year I don't think we had anything much, the year before we had some, about 3/4 years ago we got it bad.

The higher you are (altitude not latitude) the worse the snow is, so generally the hills to the NW of Leeds heading towards the Dales/Pennines do get more snow than SE Leeds, and as I drive along the A65 towards Leeds the snow becomes noticably less by the time I reach Horsforth.

The council aren't bad at gritting main roads, but side roads and pavements can be bad and as a result the main roads can get very busy as the rat-runs aren't clear. The buses and trains do tend to keep running reasonably well, although not to timetable in bad weather.

I am greatful to be able to work from home, living where I do, but it's more so that I am close for when/if daughters school closes, than because I can't get into the office.

Ah, that sounds like pretty much how it is here. That's reassuring, thank you.

Hi Spirit, I've lived in West Yorkshire for over 10 years now - Meanwood (North Leeds), then Morley (South Leeds), Saltaire and now Riddlesden (towards Skipton, so a bit further out than you are looking for).

I'd second what others have said, I always preferred North Leeds personally, lots going on and there are some nice parts.

Another idea to throw into the mix - depending on the size space you are looking for, Saltaire village is a world heritage site and is a lovely place to live, right next to the train station which takes 18 minutes to Leeds. The houses are terraced, and you only have a small yard rather than a garden - but you have beautiful countryside on your door step and good transport links. Put it on the list to visit in any case even if its too far out to move!

Hope your move goes well.

No stops between Apperley Bridge and Leeds City station. Rush hour trains take 15 minutes from Shipley to Leeds (the next stop on the way out of Leeds). I travel this line a lot so 10 minutes is my guess rather than any timetabled journey.

I see the local estate agents are already referring to the new station - get in quickly!
    * just looked it up and it seems there is another station being built on the line at Kirkstall so may take a little longer than 10 mins but looks like not all trains will call there

Same climate, same weather, same problems :D

I've not really noticed any major differences in weather (and how people cope with it) from when I lived in the south to where I live now.

    This.

I mean this in a good natured way, but what a daft question, spirit! It did make me chuckle though! :rotfl:

Glad it made you laugh nicegirl, it was semi serious really. We have an office in the Potteries region - which is south of Yorkshire of course. They always get colder/snowier weather than us down here.
