Michaels, have you been to the Odyssey yet?
For those who don't know what I'm talking about, some years ago a local visionary reopened an old cinema in Berkhamsted, The Rex, and restored it to its art deco glory. It is quite beautiful, and a wonderful place to go see films.
They've saved another old 1930s cinema in St Albans. This was originally called the Alpha, before becoming the Odeon. It has been closed for a good 10-15 years and was about to be knocked down and turned into flats. This is the Odyssey and it opened to the public a few months back.
Both have been resurrected in towns that don't have a cinema and sell out most performances. Popcorn and noisy snacks are banned. To overcome the lack of screens, several different films are played throughout the week.
The Rex is a joy to attend and I can't wait to try the Odyssey. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Not sure I can justify ringing them up to find out how well this works.vivatifosi wrote: »In Hertforrdshire, there are very few police stations open since the cuts. Watford, Stevenage, Hatfield, and Hoddesdon to be precise. Even big towns like St Albans and Hemel Hempstead, which between them probably have a population of 150,000, have no police opening hours whatsoever.
It's ridiculous.Thiw is one issue I have with the 'cost savings' generated by centralising services. Only costs to the organisation directly are considered, closing the polkice stations no doubt saves the police force money. But perhaps it costs not only individuals in time and money in having to travel further but also probably social services/benefits as those on benefits who have to travel to police stations can probably claim travel expenses back but I bet those costs are ignored when the police carry out their cost benefit analysis.
IME, it works ok. Here and in other place I have experience of there are still stations open at certain hours in some towns. The kind of places people would gave to go to anyway to buy groceries, see doctors etc.
Also IME if you are giving a witness statement you don't necessarily have to go into a police station. I've given witness statements in a home environment, four times I think.....four times as an adult and once as a child. Never been charged with anything, so don't know what happens if you are asked to go in, but I'm sure you're given a lift if needed. Getting home might be up to you, bet you rather find your way home than be invited to stay though.

I had a horrible day with my back today. Luckily the cricket was on so I lay on the sofa watching the Lankans beat the plucky English.
Then I went for a swim. Hey presto! One much better back. I did a km in the outdoor pool in the rain.
It was one of those mad summer days here when a cool change came through. It was 37C at 4pm and 23C at 5pm0 -
Perhaps you put something under the semi-circular bit and lever the clips out??I think....0

Wow, you've just brought back some memories for me. I've been to both before they originally closed down, showing my age now!Spend less now, work less later.0 -

Me too! They are way nicer now though. Last time I went to the Odeon it St Albans I got chewing gum on the butt of my trousers.
For those who haven't been since the refurb, this is what the Rex looks like downstairs (upstairs it has more conventional seating, but bigger and more leg room than a normal cinema):

And this is the Odyssey:

They are both stunning. I can't wait to see the Odyssey for real. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Doozer girl? Anyone else who fancies chipping in.
Pretty sure I'm leaning towards ( at a later date after extension done.....or maybe now and worth redoing...? ) wallpapering with a photo image of bluebell woods on one side of the hallway.
Ceiling lights are morrocan and jewelled. I pretty sure I will be havig to add wall lights for sufficient light requirement, How many and where I don't know. ATM staircase is in process of being stripped and I think I will leave wood and put runner on ( colour undecided....yellow sounds fun, like a yellow brick road...but will be lead by design of rest of hallway). But I cannot seem to reconcile to rest of paint colour. White doesn't work. The hallway is dark and is going to get darker...pale colours look dingy.
part from 'beige' or 'mushroomy' I feel low on inspiration. Any one want to chip in?0 -
