Library question: is it normal to ask a library to buy a book? None of the local libraries seem to have Capital in the 21st Century.0

Why do people use the French word for Scotland, 'Ecosse', on car stickers rather than Scotland or even Alba?
It's a subliminal message that proves beyond all doubt that 99.908765 % of Scots want Independence from the R.O.U.K. and to become the 102nd D!partement of La R!publique'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -
Where would you recommend for a week's holiday that is:
Within say three hours flight of London
Sunny and warm
Safe, ie no riots, rebels or civil wars?
Last year I went to N Tenerife, the bit that's not filled with bucket and spade tourists. It is quite beautiful in places, esp Mount Teide. Not sure how long the flight is though as I left from Barcelona.Library question: is it normal to ask a library to buy a book? None of the local libraries seem to have Capital in the 21st Century.
Yes. Most library authorities (here anyway) have a system in place for this and apportion a percentage of their budget. I am on the panel that meets to decide what to buy. The more info you can give the better... so it's always good to provide an ISBN, especially for an Aussie edition as most LAs prefer to buy an edition published in that country (for spelling etc). I'd also stress it's newness (we tend not to buy titles that are several years old). If it has been reviewed in any main press or on the tv or radio, that also helps if you state that, as that helps show that there is an audience. Finally, if it is a good number, I'd give its position on the Amazon best sellers list, I would imagine Piketty is near the top of the economics best sellers still, if not at the top. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? It has snowed here. Not enough to stop us going anywhere, but enough to be annoying for driving through. Not convinced it's enough for playing in, really, but will have to see what the kids make of it.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
Update for Generali...
These links may help. Strangely it isn't easy to find on the Amazon Australia website.

Cheers Viva. TBH I find it very strange that the library services in two council areas don't have probably the most significantnt political economy book to have been written so far in the 21st century.
I've been listening to a podcast which reminded listeners of the 'I have a gub' scene drom Take the Money and Run. Brilliant.0 -
Fir didn't know it had snowed when I called him this morning. I told him to look outside. He said, he might have to wear trousers today and seemed quite disappointed. ( he's been going for some kind of unbroken chain of wearing shorts not trousers to the gym).0

PasturesNew wrote: »Snow here too. My first snow in this house. Very little of it though - once beyond my car park I doubt you can see any except on grassy verges and fields. Certainly all the roads are 100% clear beyond the car park.
It's the sort of powdery sprinkling that means there's snow on some of my patio slabs, but they aren't covered.
Yep, that's what its like here.
Its interesting to note that repairs in concrete paths, for example are better covered. Why would they be colder?0 -
We had snow last week on Thursday. None today, it's totally clear, thankfully. Car is booked in for new tyres on Monday.
DS also has his GCSE options to decide on.
He has to do:
English Language
English Literature
Maths
3x Sciences
Short course RE
Short course PE (I don't know what these mean!)
He has three options. He wants to do:
Business Studies
Economics
Geography.
It looks a bit heavy to me and with two brand new subjects to him. I suggested he leave BS or Economics to A Level and did Art instead, but it looks like Art might go on the reserve list with history, at the moment.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

A glorious day to report in Sydney, mid-20s and sunny with a breeze. It's just lovely.
I don't think I said, I went to the arthritis support group yesterday. I was the youngest by about 30 years. It was pretty depressing and not really what I hoped for. I might go along anyway. We'll see.0
