That's the nearest bit of the M25 to me.

It was raining stair-rods earlier today!

I got so wet walking to work yesterday that I had to buy a cheap hairdryer in order to be able to work. It wasn't my hair that was wet... I have a very good raincoat, but my feet and trouser legs. I can confirm that boots and socks do dry out with a hairdryer, and that the blade style hand dryers are very good for trouser bottoms (while keeping one eye open to ensure that it isn't that exact moment that the male cleaner comes in to clean the toilets).

Though of course if I get talking to anyone in health and safety at work, none of this happened... can do without the chat about using unauthorised electrical appliances, or misuse of organisational apparatus. I may however be secretly proud of my lateral thought. But you know what they say about pride and falls.

Sorry to hear about your friend Hamish. That must be a terrible shock. My condolences to his friends and family.

Really sorry to hear that mate.

The first of mine to go was when I was 19: she died of a brain hemorrhage.

I was 16/17 but he was mid twenties. Terrible reaction to cannabis. Took about six months and was tormenting to watch.

Second I was 18. Suicide ( cannabis psychosis presumed on top of other mental illness)

Not a drug I like being referred to casually as a result really.

The media seems to promote the idea that we can live in a certain way and live forever* but it just ain't so.

*Led by the Daily Mail's attempt to split all foods into 2 groups: those that cause and cure cancer. Admittedly there does seem to be some overlap between the 2.

Very much so - you can increase of decrease the relative odds, but not avoid the risk completely.

In terms of the DM-esque categorisations, there are so many factors to take into account - which organ you're looking at, the dose, is it metabolised into something else?, what else is around at the same time etc etc etc. Personally I don't think there are any magic bullets.

The only certainty is that no-one is immortal.

Condolences Hamish. A colleague recently passed away suddenly. I'd guess there were some lifestyle factors involved, but still was completely unexpected. The only positive I can find is that he passed away when he was out with friends partaking in his favourite hobby.

The first of my group of friends died earlier this year. After a long battle with The Black Dog.

I stopped taking the article seriously when they said the Eames chairs are made of plastic. They aren't, they are made from fibreglass. They are also a design classic. If they can't get that right, how do we know they've got the prices right? Still, proof that you can have too much money.

I don't even like two of them. You can't buy taste.

So sorry to hear about your friend, Hamish.

LNE has been the only one of my friendship group to die so far, and of course that wasn't natural causes.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I don't qualify as any of the above - so far after work have taken 2 of 3 kids to youth club and back (DD2 has a temperature), done dinner and washing up and now have to hire a car for tomorrow as ours is definitely not up to a 100 mile round trip :( Need at least 6 seats so price goes up from 12 quid (golf) to 52 quid (zafira) :(

Also tomorrow is football, drama class, tesco, inlaw family party in kent ( :( ) and Sunday there is church (= lie in for me :) ) then return hire car and kids drama school audition.

Where do you find a hire car for the next day at £12, please? :)

    Exactly what I thought.

I thought I was brave planning velvet curtains in a kitchen....but silk panels on the island that 'people cannot help but touch' makes be wonder how easy that is to keep clean, along with great leather handles in a food preparation area.

There is putting aesthetics high on the list and accepting patina of wear as charm and beauty, but you need the right canvas for that too.

I adore leather, but honestly, I'm a messy cook, it wouldn't work for me as drawer handles..... I cannot imagine having to wash and dry hands before each draw opening when I realise mid manoeuvre I have the wrong spatula or whatever....

No idea. I'm asleep at British tea time. Apart from when I'm in Britain.
