my upgrade is due with orange / EE.
i currently have an iphone 5. i am quite happy to stay with my provider as their contracts and coverage suit my needs. i have convinced myself i want to move away from apple as getting bored now having had an iphone 4 and 5.

researching alternatives within EE i can get a samsung S5 or HTC M8. (have heard good reports about the LG G3 but this is not available thru EE directly but possibly is thru carphone warehouse), can anyone push me towards either model as i am reading conflicting reports and am now quite confused.
call quality via bluetooth is important, camera less so. screen to view skygo etc is important so do want a 5" screen. Wi fi and 3g / 4g performance is important also.
any advice greatly received.
thank you.

I've been very pleased with my 1st gen Moto G 4G, 4.5" screen. It shouldn't be too long before they launch the 2nd gen 4G version, which will have a 5" screen (which was a feature I didn't want).

Don't bother with the M8 huge issues specifically on EE since the latest system upgrade. My phone won't receive texts EE aren't interested they say it is a problem with the phone. HTC admit there is a problem but can't give me a time frame for when the problem will be fixed. Avoid EE and HTC like the plague appalling customer service from both.
  • Have a look at the Sony xperia range, awesome phones.

Any other considerations than the basics you've listed?
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it
  • As an update I settled on a Samsung S5 and after using it for the past week and a half I am pleased with the choice I made. Yes it is different to the Apple iOS that I am used to, but I now find it has many advantages, not least the expandable memory of a micro SD card and the ease of putting music on to the phone without the hassle of iTunes.
The screen is a joy, the battery life incidentally doesn't seem any better than my iPhone 5 so after quite heavy usage by the late evening it is down to around 20% and ready for its overnight charge.
It also has a removeable battery which should prove an asset once the battery life diminishes further down the ownership line.
  • I have gone from 4s to Nokia's 930 running windows phone 8.1 update 1, no regrets!

Be careful moving back to normal products after Apple.

The quality of Apple stuff is far superior than anything else bar Blackberry of old.

One thing I've noticed, is that with Apple stuff just tends to work rather than needing help to get running, it's those small little things IMHO that make the difference.

Whatever you do, don't sell your iPhone - give yourself the option of using it again if Android doesn't work out for you.

I have considered whether I might try something other than apple next time around, as the iPhone 6 is too big.

But Windows phone is awful, Samsung's batteries are ropey, I avoid Sony in general (they tried to rip me off years ago), we're seeing these issues with HTC, Blackberry may not have a future, so what is there left?

I think in my case, I'll probably keep my current iPhone 5 and go SIM-only.

I recently moved from an iPhone 5 to an Xperia Z3 Compact in green and couldn't be happier. It's the first real android flagship I've owned with waterproofing, minimal bezels and insanely good battery life.

I'm keeping the iPhone, though, as a backup; I still like Apple devices.

    iOS 6 (Maps)
iOS 7 (disable the lockscreen without needing to know the passcode)
    iOS 8 (Wi-Fi I think)
