It poured yesterday teatime just as we were on our way home from the dentists & I'd stopped to give Collie Wobble a walk around a community woodland that is half way home.
There seems to be so many mushrooms this year. I don't really know my poison when it comes to those. I would like to as I see their potential but would probably end up getting my stomach pumped........again.0 -
Here are our new Sussex hens. I think the white is much more commonly found than the buff, but these are splendid examples of both (clicky):
The chap who bred them lives only a few miles away across the big valley. Although he still writes and lectures on poultry, he keeps a fairly low profile nowadays. He took over a well-known collection of the birds in the 1970s and he's worked ever since to improve the different breeds, winning many prizes along the way. DW met him while stewarding at garden club.
So, what started out as a job finding a couple of workaday pullets has ended with these two charmers, already in lay!
Vera the Vorwerk is ignoring them completely. She was down at her gate, as usual, waiting to be let loose in the garden!:rotfl:0 -
hi all
apparently the swallows and swifts struggled to nest build where there was a lack of water and mud. also the heat was dring their nests into collapsing so few hatchings in some areas. marshland areas have plenty. we have lots here but they have not nested in the normal sites..... so next year maybe when numbers are down...
one of my mini shetlands is very lame, his knee is swollen ?
got the vet out yesterday, he came back today with a portable xray machine.. id put the mini [lori] in confinement down in the coral with stephy ,another mini, for company yesterday .. walked the pair of them up to the stables this morning and when I took lori out for the vet , stephy was literally trying to climb OVER the stale door !! so we shut her in. lori then went mental cos he couldn't see her [only hear her kicking 5 bells out of the door in temper] so vet gave him a sedative... well tried to ! after he had reared half a dozen times he got the needle in... didn't make a hoot of difference so he wacked in another dose ... worked ...until we tried to get his front 2 feet on the xray board .. he was a dead weight standing ! finally got the xrays after about half hour faffing about [stephy still kicking the door ! ] it was bedlam !
lori is like a stroppy staffy the way he squares up to you if he doesn't want to do something ...
vet did ask if I could wear "proper" foot wear next week when he comes again ... apparently scared the beejeebers out of him with the "little sh*t" rearing and me in flip flops :rotfl:
my reply explained that if I was going to get my foot mashed they wouldn't have to cut off a boot to get to it
needless to say today I am kernackered ... but been occupied
I hope you have all had a good week so far xx0 -
Lovely looking hens dave - Beautiful. I've never seen a buff coloured one.
They get high prices at the rare breed poultry sale which is only on twice a year here.
Alfie - Hope the little horse is cured very soon.
Beautiful sun set this evening but getting dark earlier - always seems to crash in does the darkening at this time. Took Collie wobble on a new hike up a track that is quite stunning. Just about got caught out with the light going rapidly. People camping on the beach tonight.0 -
Sheep sheared yesterday which is great. OH couldn't assist being with plaster but I manged to get the girls penned up before the shearer came which was good. The tups were a bit of a hassle but eventually got them & everyone is dosed and without their jackets so we can stand easy.
Picked plums the other day so had to make jam. I made a small batch the other day & had a heck of a job getting a set but got it to the point of burning & then took it off the boil. OH promised he's wash the 'big pan'. I had bother making chutney with plums a few years back. I'll make wine the next time I think as it's quite a clart & took ages.
I've got about 16 jars all in so a good lot. It'll be the apples next.
I must have walked miles yesterday & ache all over.0 -
So much to do all of a sudden....
I forgot to mention that we finally had the hallway and our bedroom /dressing room properly carpeted last Tuesday. We bought the carpet in early February and the shop hung onto it for us.
We couldn't remember what we'd bought exactly, but DW assured me our bedroom would be 'a little different' from bedroom 3, which was done about 18 months ago, using our old 2009 bedroom carpet cut down....
They're identical!:o
At least the hallway is different, and we're consistent, buying the same thing 9 years apart.:rotfl:
In other news, I bought 3 reclaimed railway sleepers in Mole Valley Farmers for £15. OK they are a bit rustic, so probably came from 'furren parts,' but that's fine when the straight ones are £20 each.On hearing this at the Market yesterday, someone offered me another 3 half sleepers free, provided I take away about 10 grey slabs as well. How can I refuse?
Madly raking through 'Afghanistan' with the hope of sowing grass seed this week. Although it's flat(tish) there are loads of stones buried by the digger to exhume. Also bought seed for the dodgy bits in the top field. I'm going 50:50 with Horse Woman 2 with that.
DW madly preparing for the Garden Club show tomorrow. She does get competitive. As usual, I'm not bovvered. Got one useless rose bowl already! :rotfl:
We've had 5 eggs already. :j I'd quite forgotten why we keep hens! Introduced the newbies to Vera the Vorwerk, who took an instant dislike to the buff one. She had a go at it, but when there was no response, she went off into the long grass, where she sulked all afternoon. After that, she decided to come out and join the other two, and they've got on fine ever since. :A
Still no sign of "they woolly things" here.....0 -
That's good with the eggs Dave. I'm not getting any at all & had to buy some the other day. grumble grumble.
I just put a mountain of empty egg boxes in the shed as there's little point in cluttering up the pantry with them.
Funny that with the carpet - good that you aren't fickle in your taste.
Nice now but really heavy showers so off to walk the collie wobble before the next plout.0 -
It is lovely to be back
Things here have been good, this year we had fruit all spring/summer long and we have had a fair amount of veg and salad although they are both the focus for next year. Currently on the list for an allotment too so that we can have more space for growing.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Evenin' all.
Himself is still back home and calling twice a day. The longer he's there, the more I can hear his accent creeping back. Sounds like I'm going to get to see him for a couple of days at the end of the month.
FIL is doing well, apparently, now using a walker, and all Himself's old school mates that are down there are making a point of getting him along to gigs, so he has some time for things he actually enjoys.
We've entered Spider Season this weekend, so each evening is punctuated by crashes, bangs, wallops and felines stampeding through the house in pursuit of what Himself calls 'Eaters'. They are rather chunky for males, so I dread to think how big the ladies are, wherever they're hiding.
I noticed that my Pyracantha was groaning with berries yesterday. It's groaning with Wood Pigeons today - I'm not convinced that there will be berries in March for the Blackbirds and Thrushes, at this rate.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Nice to hear from you Rummer - glad that the growing season has been good for you.
Glad that FIL is doing well JoJo.
Very heavy showers here & feeling tired out - definetly gone over into Autumn.0
