Quiet in here, but quiet can be deceptive....

We waited till dark tonight to attend to Marvin the cockerel's spur, which he'd broken, but as soon as we'd done that, Pete arrived with the much-promised load of logs. We threw those blindly into one of the log barns while he went to dig out some fence struts we have spare. Exchange is no robbery, and anyway, we still owe Pete for that fence he made two years ago! :o Will we ever get a bill? ASnswers on the back of a used "£20 note. :D

But that wasn't the only exchange today. Much earlier, our builder showed-up, wanting a couple of roofing battens, which he swapped for a gate. It looked a nice tongue & groove outdoor gate, and it was brand new, so for a moment I thought I'd done a good deal, but his grin told me otherwise. Hmmm, someone had built the gate "backzefore," so the bracing didn't end at the hinges. It will soon fall out of shape! Still, it might do for a chicken run.....

Half way through the afternoon, the man who normally services our Aga called. We felt embarrassed, till we realised he knew it was long gone. Nothing that gets past Johnny! He'd been researching the history of his family's grandfather clock, circa 1700, which had led him to the small village DW hails from. So, we have a mutual interest.

The clock is one of only 28 identified and must be one of the very earliest of them. He'd had it restored and he just wanted us to see photos of the result. It looked stunning, if not very accurate - you only got an hour hand in those days!

After we'd locked up, the hair on the back of my neck stood up as I realised there was someone in the garden. Blow me if it wasn't one of the electricians, looking for us. No he wasn't offering to do any work but he wanted his portable LED work light he'd left behind. He got it, with a promise to come back and finish next week. Hurrah! :j

Thank you Dave for the insulating blockwork information :) I thought I was being fobbed off by BG (was enquiring about the free cavity wall insulation) when they said we should already have some insulation because of the age of the house. Seems we do then, albeit not very effective insulation imo :(

I have heard stories about damp problems being caused by CWI, but I do still envy the people who have it & have lovely toasty warm houses :o

Btw, what did you mean when you said "In exposed places, CWI can be one of the worst things you can do to a house, so tread carefully and do research"?? Our house is quite exposed to the elements.

There are theories about the toxicity of CWI causing many health issues because of the way it emits gas from the substances used over a period of time. These gases are not good.
In the USA they are removing it because of this.

    Sounds worrying, choille :(

What are you using for insulation?? You must be a lot more exposed to the weather up there.
