And...we're back! I was struggling going cold ham there
Am now 99% sure I'm going to use my now redundant small aquarium tank as an open-top terrarium for the cactus. I think they'll do better that way rather then dotted about in pots, plus I won't be jabbed so often
I'm also temped to scythe down the shasta daises that are now flopping everywhere to the detriment of other plants in the border. Lesson learned, they'll get a Chelsea chop next year.0 -
Time seems to keep slipping away from me this week
The gardener did an amazing amount of work and the grass and hedges have been thoroughly tamedShame it has been raining endlessly since he finished! We are lucky that our gardener is such a hard worker and charged less that half the amount of the other quotes we received. We have made sure that we have let all our friends know about this good work so hopefully he will benefit.
If the weather holds tomorrow I am going to get the beds cleared and covered for next year. We did not plant any veg but the currants are producing a bumper crop and their are plums ripening on the tree. Not to mention a flurry of gooseberries and blueberries.
It would be nice to have the weather to just relax in the garden.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Morning all,
Well I think we can kiss good bye to any summer now, what an awful year weather wise, and life in general, I think a LOAD of us has had some sort of mayhem ( if that is the right word) ..I will def be glad to see the back of this year...
Took some birds to the farm auction yesterday... Not really happy with the prices, but hayho I didn't put any reserves on them, and the had to go as I have the next lot of youngsters / grown on chicks to bring on..
The hillbilly piglets ( well the 5 month old ones/ porkers) will be going to auction/ market on Friday, so we are hoping it will pay off by running them on to more or less butcher weight..
Youngest has decided to call the puppy Lola..
Davesnave.. Have you done anymore village fairs/ plant selling??
luceille.. Did you put in for a remark on papers??Work to live= not live to work0 -
Lucielle - I do hope that your son does get a course that he enjoys. It doesn't seem right that he hasn't got to do the 6th form.
Hope the show goes well - what a lot of workload you have on just now. Come Tuesday you will just melt, flop into knackeredness. Why not come up here & you can have a break in the middle of no where - offer is always open.
Yesterday we managed to get outside - it was really quite nice with a breeze most of the afternoon so kept the midgies at bay. Planted some shrubs that have been needing in the ground. I bought a palm - so I'll see how that goes on. Brought the sheep off the hill on Friday when the road seemed very quite - we had to bring them down the main road, but they just came walking & knew where they were going - good girls.
I have another Hebredian shearling with sore eye lids & ears, so I got her treated & will have to keep an eye out on it. Funny that - hardy breed, but super sensitive to midgies.
Starting to rain here, so we need to go & pick some stuff up - escape the day in Inverness. Glad we got outdoors yesterday.0 -
CTC - sorry the prices weren't good for your birds.
I have sheep advertised for sale, but no enquiries even - I didn't want to put them to the sale as it's a bit hit or miss. 60 miles away so not that handy to take to or bring them home again if not sold - stressful for them as well - the journey.0 -
Yep was a bit disappointed, BUT, hayho this is how sales go, but it does mean we have a cheque/ money coming for them in a few weeks...
There are 3 sales a month that we normally go to ( could be alot more ) and if we take birds and general crap, plants etc, and average x amount of money per sale, then it all goes towards our income... It is suprising what crap sells in these auctions... Even buckets with holes in them, if they are cheap enough lol...Work to live= not live to work0 -
Hi all, have requested to have the paper remarked, still waiting for the result.
I think DS2 has decided he's going to this college even if the mark is changed to a C. Been having to send loads of paperwork over to the accountant to see if we can get any financial aid towards his accommodation costs. So in one fell swoop 1 chicken is going to uni and another chicken is going to stay at college for 4 days a week. Roll on Tuesday and back to work for a rest!
Thanks for the offer Choille, think you have enough on your plate at the moQ!

Really not bothered from the POV of making money, though. Just don't want to let people down. :think:0 -
Sounds as if you are all really busy
We don't really have an ongoing way of generating additional income however we are cutting back where we can to give us some more breathing space.
The fruit from the garden has saved a few pounds each week as have the herbs so I am looking at other things we can have in the garden that take care of themselves and save us a few quid along the way.
Our currant bushes are huge, should I be cutting them back at any point?Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -

I think if maintenance is 'normal,' about 1/3 of each bush gets cut back each year, but maybe if you have left them a few years, you need to do 1/2 and half next year.
RAS knows. I am not the wortld's greatest fruit gardener. In fact all that side of things is quite neglected due to the building.:o
Just spent the morning invesigating why we were getting mould on the new skirting in Bed 1. I thought it was damp penetration since insulating the cavity, but in fact it seems to be from residual water in the old heating pipes under the floor.
That's good, of course, but it's been a bit soul-destroying levering off the new skirting (we don't put 'em on tentatively here!) and then chiselling-up the floor....:(:(:(0
