Since an illness, DW has had a condition that means she can never go anywhere near smokers. Also, just a quick temperature change is enough to send her into paroxysms of coughing. Makes Bob Fleming on The Fast Show look normal!

    I jest, but it's not funny. :(

Luckily, huge amounts of dust don't seem to be a major trigger, which is just as well this week. Living room wall comes down today, and looking at the weather forecast, next week it's the ceiling. Happy days! :)

    So, er.......

    Small holding, and gardening ....

    :)

Beautiful morning here. The frost last night meant brilliant scent trails on last nights late walk ( though wish I had worn more, the short legging type bottoms froma pair of pjs were not a wise choice) and the dogs had a grey night.

Sadly I was also very, very remiss in not checking the fleece and cloches in the herb garden. I think I have lost my very favourite frnch lavender. :(.
  • afternoon all,

fencers in the middle of putting the fencing up, as you can see we are doing a sort of 'buffer' between the footpath and the actual pig runs, this might also be used as a holding area to get the pigs in and out of the trailer.. they did make a boob, as I wanted the front fence a lot higher, so we can do that later on, but in the mean time, any suggestions on what I can plant infront will help screen it? poss an flowering evergreen with some rambling roses going through it??

they haven't fenced yet, just staking out etc, we have managed to leave some of the small trees in there etc

I know why you want ever greens but I think density and native is as much your friend here. Anything you move I'd have a go at resiting, if it fails it fails, if it takes off good. My concern with a lot of planting is you'll be drawing more attention not less.

An other consideration would be to stick some things which will have scent in them to naturalise. Might suggest to some you are offsetting for what they are saying is offensive? Hops, linden, honey suckles...etc, growing through what ever you plant. ( if they are pig safe)

Pouring down here. Much milder. Water coming out of the tap again.

Escolonia [sp?] CTC. Glossy green leaves, white, pink or red flowers. Very hardy & grows quick.
  • good point LIR...

hubby has just told me the gates have been hung( he bought them this morning ), a just 'tweaking' one or two bits, and its away to go... we finally move some pigs on there... and give the two runs a long awaited rest...

just need to run a water pipe and put the water drinker we have in storage in situ, and move the pig arc.. (that will be fun dragging it behind the car up the lane lol, even though we bought a secondhand one this week, its only a 6x4 with no floor, which we will make a floor for it, and this will be ideal for just one or two pigs depending on the size of the piggy....

    I agree with lir.

Walk gently through the land behind the fence and see if you can find seedling hawthorn, elder, blackthorn, holly, ash, birch, anything that you can transplant.

I would go for wild roses rather than pretty ones. Pretty, appropriate, wild life friendly and vicious; if you get some really good gloves, you can wind the stems through other shrubs. Not however if you are letting loose pigs who you want to catch again.

I agree too. :D This is the sort of thing I do, but a few rosa rugosa to add to the mix would be useful in the bit you're not having as a holding area for loading.

Bare root alders (for areas near the stream & beyond the run) are cheap. While 'stock' usually won't touch alders, I'm not confident that term includes pigs!

The block wall separating our living room from a silly, narrow passageway has now gone, giving us another 3' or so in there. :D

The passageway door was bricked-up on Monday, causing the cats more confusion. They went to sleep and the door had become a wall by the time they woke up! :rotfl:
  • now I like the rosa rugosa, is that what they call a dog rose? I am sure there is one or two of them scattered around the place ..

Where would be the best place to buy them from, and how quick do they grow? do they need pruning to keep them like a hedge??

Note, dog roses are protected. They are GREAT though! because they provide super dense and high cover over time much like bramble.

No, rosa rugosa are different. :)
