    There should be an option to change network selection from auto to manual. There is never a 'scan' option.

    I agree - but not on this phone !!
    We are planning on getting a replacement phone tomorrow - hopefully. this will solve it.

    Just checked on an ancient Nokia 6100: if you (or anyone else) have an option to select Auto/Manual, then select Manual and then the phone will then check for available networks-there is no manual way to scan. Obviously the SIM needs to be installed.
    I don't see how any GSM phone, however ancient, cannot have such an option somewhere?
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
