So if 3g is needed for emailing/webbrowsing etc - why does http://www.tesco.com/direct/nokia-225-black/168-8259.prd?pageLevel=&skuId=168-8259
claim to be 2g ?
Surely facebook and twitter need internet access - hence 3g ?
Sorry - I am starting to feel extremely old at the moment....
I guess that I am looking for a cheap 3g phone ..0 -

internet is possible over 2g. just slowly.0 -
So this is the reason why Tesco / CPW etc are able to sell phones so cheaply at the moment - the fact that these cheapies are 2g - so will be of no use at all in a few years time !!
I am looking for a simple phone (preferably no web browsing/email) but with a camera and possibly music player - that needs to operate on 3g - a tall order, I think ?0 -
Personally I don't believe that 2g is phased out.
CPW sell them cheap because of the commission they keep getting from networks (God knows for what if this is just PAYG upgrade). The same phones are much more expensive on simple PAYG.
If you want to use internet on some old contract, check the costs first as this can be very expensive.0 -
Yes - the phone is only 2g - my wife isn't interested in web browsing or emails on mobiles !!
So - if a 2g signal is being phased out - what will happen to those relying on 2g signals ?
They'll upgrade to 3G-the same way as the entire UK upgraded from analogue TV to digital, with very few issues
Your old 2G Nokia should still have an option to 'manually select the network operator', somewhere in the menus.
Sounds like she is on the same ancient Orange tariff as my MIL-she gets bills for 9p! Just don't make a 10 minute call on it, because the minute rate is massive. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

The phone doesn't have any network operator options - it is so old that it only allows one fixed network !!
I think that, to start with - a new phone will be necessary
If we get a new 2g phone (with network selection option) - I am assuming that that will be better than her present phone with a 2g signal ?
She gets charged 10p pert txt - I know that - but I think that it is only 2p per minute ...0 -
Don't assume anything. If you want to stay with EE and if the phone is locked, order a fee PAYG sim and check 2g signal with some other phone.
How do you know that you "can get a decent 3g signal" where you are? Check the 2g signal with the same handset before buying a new 2g-only one.0 -

The phone is not locked
And I used to be with EE until 6 months ago and used 3g at home !!0 -
EE keep decommissioning masts. You can't rely on what was 6 months ago.0

The tariff you are on is called OVP (Orange Value Promise) Virgin equivalent
If you are happy with the rates (they are expensive, but if not used, that doesn't matter!!) then hang in there.
Maybe a better phone would look for the T Mob signal as well as the Orange one???0
