I don't believe 2g is going to be phased out because it is what most voice calls and text messages are made over. I know EE decommissioned a lot of masts but most of them were duplicated ones anyway and although I appreciate there has been a loss of service, the ones removed were generally old and under-performing.

I was also under the impression that part of the optimisation programme was that they had bought a lot of a particular frequency??(apologies not technically minded) that is the equivalent of 2g and will apparently improve voice and text transactions.

I can't say when this will happen mind!! I think there was something in the t&c's that say they can withdraw the virgin plan as long as they give you notice. Not saying they will but might be worth considering in any decisions you make.

    .
I think it's only a matter of time, we are already experiencing it now by the fact the masts that get turned off are 2g.
It was 2011 when 3 started turning off 2g roaming and whilst I agree 2g at the moment assists connectivity how long is it going to carry on.
I'm sure a while back there was also mention that 3g and 4g antennas reduces the emissions over 2g, so brings in the H&S brigade.
Over in the States AT&T announced a few months back they would be turning off all 2g masts by 2017
Regardless of whether 2g is going to be completely phased out it certainly seems to be diminishing day by day as the masts get tuned off
It's not just about the money

Ah ok! I misunderstood then. I left Orange before the mast removal got underway so obviously got the wrong end of the stick!!

That map has not been updated since 2012, and in some cases depending on the network, since 2005.
It's definitely not something that you should be reliant on.

You can select the network operator from Phone Settings (Menu 4-2). Network Selection.

You are supposed to - but it is NOT on this phone !
I can see the option - but there is no "scan" or any way to change the network from orange.
