    My favourite word is "incongruent"

    Ok, lets try again... :)

I found a piece of plastic in a bread roll from one of the supermarket. I was thinking of putting in on Facebook just for fun so others can have a laugh (obviously is not serious so some people could find it funny). But then I started thinking if I can legally name a company whilst doing that. Is it or is it not?

    Apparently it isn't funny...
would you say the same if i.e. your child would choke on a sharp piece of plastic like that?

Also, you've rejected a 5 pound compensation so what further point does this thread serve?
so just to finish the saga with a "plastic" bread roll I went to the store and complained and was offered £5 voucher, which I did not accept because for me it was never about money and to be honest £5 is an insult because I spent more money to buy lunch because I did not want to eat the rest of rolls which supposed to serve me as lunch at work.

    The key words are "to finish the saga" is the key point here... The saga isn't finished until you either;

    A. Accept the generous compensation

    B. Decline it and drop the issue

    C. Go and tell the company that 5 pound is insufficient and deal with them

I think sharp plastic is far more dangerous than a cockroach leg :) I am sure I have heard they like to eat insects in Asia. I never heard of anyone who like to chew on a bit of plastic :)

Arguably it wasn't that dangerous as you spotted it or knew it was there before actually swallowing it. Sorry OP, I'm just a pedant.

We're kind of used to these type of threads. And our views usually are coloured because invariably everyone usually:
    a) overreacts
    b) mentions it could have been life threatening
    c) uses the old "what if it had been a child" or
    d) some combination of some/all of the above.

The other thing that colours our view is the fact most of us are familiar with law to some extent or another. And one of the basic principles is you can't sue for what could have happened, you can only sue if it did happen.

So what did happen is that they provided goods that were not fit for purpose/did not conform to contract. In such the most they would be liable for would be the price you paid for the offending item (probably about 70p-£1 I'm guessing?).
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Insects are quite popular in the UK as well. For example. And there are some excellent reasons that we should be incorporating insects into our everyday diets. :A

lol, I can assure you it is not :)

why wasnt £5 enough then, the rolls probably cost you £1

I have found things in food before, and written or called head office.

they reply saying they will investigate and usually send minimal compensation

The trouble with this sort of thing is that it's not just about the unwelcome bit of plastic in the mouth, it's about the effects it has. For a start it ruins lunch or dinner and this can mean that all sorts of problems arise.

It's also about the lack of care and hygiene in the manufacture. The company should be made aware and they should compensate for ruining someone's day, £5.00 is certainly not enough, I'd say at least £25.00 and an apology with promise to investigate.

I dont see how a small piece of plastic in a roll can ruin someones day, at least it wouldnt ruin mine, i may be a bit !!!!ed but thats all
  • It wasn't about the money yet it is an insult, what did you expect them to do, get on their knees and beg for forgiveness?

Get a grip OP, considering the amount of produce they sell these things do surprisingly happen!

Nothing happened, no one was injured....move on.

1 roll was affected, I'm sure the rest would be fine to have eaten.

You have to realise that some people are quiete squeamish. Finding something like that in their food will put them off the whole meal.

Some of you can just dismiss something like this, others struggle.
