Presumably named as such to disassociate it from W8 as far as possible...
More likely

ah,
But all those "Leaks" of how the next windows was going to look from people with a claimed inside track or a 'source' to the data and confidently calling in Windows 9 are now proved to be a load of fantasists and Walty Mitty's.0 -

Unless the above reason why it couldn't be called Windows 9 wasn't discovered until relatively recently. In which case, they've avoided a potential Y2Kesque scenario, which is nice.
Some of the promotional material strongly suggests that it was nearly called Windows One (One platform, One store, Windows... Ten), so it may well have been last-minute.Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?

Windows 9 was initially going to be a platform with the best of XP, Vista and Win7. It was then pushed to one side and Windows 10 was given that name in an attempt to show it wasn't simply an upgrade of Win 8 but a totally new platform. This was because commerce didn't have much take up on Win 8 so MS are hoping that Win 10 will be the rebirth needed. You have to understand it was necessary as Bill is down to his last $80 Billion. :cool:0

Just been trying Windows 10 preview using VMware Player and it runs fine even hosted on Windows 7. Seems like an ideal progression from Windows 7 with the speed enhancements of 8.1, I reckon it'll be very popular0

Perhaps they were worried about the German speaking market.

Yes, I did a clean install; it wouldn't let me download on a Mac, but I got the ISO via a Windows VM and then installed it onto a blank VM.Jivesinger wrote: »I think you can clean install it, so you shouldn't need Windows (or anything else) to be there on the PC before you start.0 -
I'm having a thrash at Win 10, ISO loaded onto 8Gb pen drive. Didn't work first time so did it again and it's now running. Looking good thus far and I kept all my other software, docs and pics. :cool:0
