I don’t know how many people on the Debt Free Diaries forum keep their diary going all the way through…….tracking their progress until all of their debts are paid off. I think a lot of people on here don’t have a real debt mountain like I have but are just feeling the pinch a little and trying to manage their funds better. Threads appear…..threads disappear……a bit of chit chat and gone……..:(
I started in September 2014 so that is 15 months of ‘Brogden’s Debt Disaster.’ Some of the people who were inspirations to me in starting and people who joined my thread early on are irregular posters now to put it mildly. Each day I see a hundred new posts from so many people but I am just not reading many of these anymore and I need a rest……I need to ‘rebase.’ We are getting towards the end of the year so…….rather than to let the thread fade out, I’m going to call it a day now.
I am reflective this Christmas. I know I am at a crossroads (…..pretentious.) It is the first Christmas since I was 18 where I have not been on somebody’s payroll. I have burbled on about it before but ‘debt’ is one thing and ‘life’ and ‘security’ are other and much bigger things. I have a job to do in ‘getting there.’ I am not, not, not ignoring the debts…I have just paid an ILD off and another is going on New Years Eve BUT these are a rather small part of the overall picture (…..pretentious again.)
There’s the mortgage. There’s the pensions. There’s ordinary savings. Oh God I forgot……there’s the work (self employment….) Taking all of these thingies into account, I can’t see that to have a diary which is devoted to just debt busting is the thing that I should be maintaining and I think I am losing my audience because the thread may be in the wrong place. I may also be losing my audience because it’s boring…..and pretentious!!
In thanking you all for your support and kindness, I will just illustrate how good you are with my story of how ‘rough’ life can be in areas outside of DFW……
I have been visiting the Pensions, Annuities and Retirement Planning Board. In my pension related-frustration I started a thread there looking for a little bit of assistance I suppose. I do not wish to tar everybody with the same brush because there were some good and pleasant people there. One has even been kind enough to put me on the course I am now on with my new IFA which has made me much happier for Christmas.
However….I DID encounter some ignorant, smug people there. The one I will never forget claims to be an IFA himself and based on the phrasing of his posts I guess he could be. After a lot of gibberish about the type of client HE wants and how I could not possibly be what HE wants, he then insults me. I report him. He insults me again. I tell him this is making me very weary, ask him to go away and I report him again. The thread is then edited by the moderators and a number of posts are either deleted or have text removed.
When I woke up the next morning I felt so angry I put my panties on backwards . I requested that the forum team delete the whole thread as it had completely lost its purpose. This they promptly did and so ends the story. What a waste of time. Why do some people make you wish you had never bothered? Is it best to just not poke ur ‘ead out of ur shell? Is this really the sort of professional we need to serve us? Can you really be authorised by the noble regulator if this is how you conduct yourself? What a p***k.
I can confidently say that none of this experience has influenced me in calling time on BDD (Brogden’s Debt Disaster.) I have always felt entirely at ease posting on DFW about anything because I had come to know you. I am not going away and I look forward to visiting a few threads over Chrimbo and beyond. I feel sure I will reinvent myself in ‘diaryland’ in the not too distant future and I guess the theme may be mortgage related. Let’s face it…….that is the big ‘beast’ I need to slay for the peace and security I desire
.
A very merry Christmas to all of you and yours. :xmastree::xmastree:

sad to see you going broggers I have very much enjoyed seeing your debt total reduce and your weekly ramblings on many money related subjects I post very rarely as I am not such a deep thinker as yourself but as basically a self employed person too I wish you much good fortune in your new venture. You will hopefully find the flexibility it brings you as much as joy as being your own boss does.

Brogden - I am really sorry you had that experience. I had similar the one time I posted in the small businesses forum. I don't understand what all these smug folk get from even being here.
I am sad to see your diary go. It's nice to have a change of voice and as you've pointed out before so many of us are breeders posting about saving 20p on the shoppingguilty as charged.
Come back soon!

Hi Brogden
I don't post much on my own, let alone anyone elses diary - but I do drop in and read them.
In the months I've been on DFW you have been a source of both sound advice and inspiration. I'll miss your diary entries, but I understand you must do what feels right for you.
I very much hope to still see your posts around the DFW site.
Take care and best wishes to you and your family for the new year.

Oh well……:o
Eco, Bob, Ali, Verb, Skinny, Jan…..thank you for your messages. It may look as though I was looking for reassurance or something. I wasn’t but it was very nice to hear from you all and read such nice things. By the way, I’ve heard of ‘Bob the Builder’ but I didn’t know of ‘Bob the Breeder.’ I know you’ve just had a very happy event Bob but calling yourself a breeder is selling yourself a bit short I think….there’s a lucky man somewhere though
I did feel I was not having a diary that was fitting with the nature of the DFD generally. I can’t change the way I am and I don’t think I should but if you look through everybody’s new posts any day there is lots of shopping, coin jars and decluttering and then this nutter going on about corporate life and pensions. What a boring old bar steward. :rotfl:!!
If you really, really, really don’t think that of me then I will get on with it and carry on. I don’t need to be of interest to everybody and I’m happy to be ‘niche’ but not a ‘redundant’ old dinosaur. I say ‘redundant’ in a more metaphorical sense here.
I will have to ‘bend it like Beckham’ and introduce the mortgage at some stage, and I will have to alter the ‘aims and objectives’ of the thread and the name, which would mean starting a new one……I can’t live under the banner of ‘Debt Disaster’ forever even if that is still relevant.
Basically, with my life events I have dropped my ‘rhythm.’ I think the diaries are all about the rhythm of everyday life and I have to re-establish that in my new ‘playboy’ mode
Thanks again everybody…….I’ll carry on in the current format for now but hopefully carrry on in some format forever.
Best wishes to all.....New Year on the way.........:eek:0 -
A lurker here
I for one very much appreciate your perspective; I'm corporate these days, and my pensions figure large in my financial planning (pun intended!). I've decided to pay the max I can into my company pension, even though I have debt repayments to make, and I feel comfortable that I've made the right decision for me. So reading about your musings and decision making processes have been really interesting.
