I nipped to Aldi this morning and came away with 2 outdoor reared pork steaks for £1.49 (part of the Super 6 meat offer), a tub of plums for 69p (part of the fruit/veg Super 6). Mature cheddar cheese for £1.75 (tastes nicer than cathedral city), 2 packs of pudding rice (they don't always have these) at 79p each. 2ltrs premium lemonade 39p, Specially Selected farmhouse seeded batch loaf 99p, Benefit cereal with red fruit £1.39, Gold Label tea (Rain Forest Alliance) £1.29, 2 x tins chopped tomatoes at 31p per tin, multigrain wheat crackers 82p, toothpaste 59p. I also got a bottle of feelgood sparkling fruit juice drink at 99p.
I haven't tried Aldi's toothpaste before as I usually get mine from Lidl but cannot be bothered to drive the 7 miles to get there.
People can get quite sniffy about Aldi, but in Germany Aldi is their equivalent of Sainsbury's. It was announced on the news this morning that Aldi has had an increase in profits of 65% which is good.
I won't need to go to Aldi for a little while as my store cupboard has been replenished.0 -
I use Lidl, the nearest Aldi is miles away and not worth the petrol
MY Lidl has free parking, many reports in local press about local ish Aldi parking invoices for overstaying your time
Lidl now take credit cards, which may help you chooseEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -

My local Lidl also do cashback, but I was told that you have to ask. Might also be helpful to someone.:)The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Please and Thank You are the magic words;)0 -
Do all Lidl now take credit cards? I'm sure ours still doesn't. I prefer Lidl for most things but I think I may just be more familiar with them. Aldi great for Christms tree chocolates though so I'll need a little trip there next week.
Have to be careful of parking at ours too, you need a free pay and display ticket and to watch which bays you park in and how long you are; Lidl carpark is just very busy. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -
With both so close I would give them both a try, I may be a bit biased as I have a Lidl much closer than and Aldi, and find Lidl reliable and fabulous quality including meat and vegetables.
Aldi, I have been into a couple of stores that put me off for many months, I have pondered back in recently only for bread rolls and again their super 6 deals.
If I have to choose it would be Lidl everytime, as I could get most things from there at a great price and freshness.
Edited to add our lidl takes debit I don't know about credit, but it's also handy to remember to take your own bags.0 -
Alternate with both to get the best of both worlds - this is what I do so that I don't need to go to the big 4.
Lidl good for weekend offers and Aldi good for Super 6 offers. Aldi good for all the products that are "like" the Brands as noted in their adverts.
It really depends on the management of a particular store if they are good or bad and that changes all the time.
You will only find out what is good for you until you try it out over time.cherryblossomzel wrote: »Thanks all. Sounds like I'll have to alternate a bit between the two until I figure it out.
You're fortunate in having the two close together. I do almost all my shop in local Aldi these days as I have to make a special trip to nearest Lidl. Aldi's fine but DH loves Lidl's luxury muesli so I go there to stock up and buy other bits and pieces while I'm there. Both shops are a case of 'suck it and see' with products you've not tried before so try both and make your choices.0 -
my local Aldi is very well run and the fruit and veg of fab quality. the local lidl however, doesn't seem to have such good management of its fresh produce. still, If I pop in I can usually find some 'bargains'. so my main shop is done in Aldi - I do find they don't do Worcestershire sauce or other bits and bobs. and my local corner shop does! so I find I only visit Tresco about twice a year now - for Christmas meats (Aldi doesn't do big enough joints of meat) and for OHs Razor blades, Green food recycling bags and some spices that Aldi don't do.0

I have both in my town.
I usually go to Lidl - I prefer their products: yoghurts, veg, cheap lager, 12 pack of Nestle water, concentrated washing up liquid (lasts ages). And I love foods from different countries, when it is on offer (Greek, German, Italian, Polish etc). Today I have bought Xmas chocolate barrels with different alco inside (I always look forward to them):). Unfortunately my closest Lidl is being renovated and shut for next few weeks, so I have to drive few miles further.
I buy Aldi's fruit, roasted veg couscous, brioche, and their Irish cream is delicious. They have bigger choice of clothes, DIY stuff, kitchenware.0 -
Got 2 Aldi & 1 Lidl where I live (North Scotland). And 1 of the Aldis is only a 10 min walk from where I live.
If there was also a Lidl within walking distance from where I am, I would use both. The Lidl where I live is on the other side of town & will involve getting buses there & back.
I can't get everything I want from Aldi, so I get remaining items from Tesco. Which I have to walk past to get to/from Aldi. :-)0
