Aldi or Lidl?

Options
There's an Aldi and Lidl across the road from each other close to my home. I don't really know much about either (I've been a Sainsbury's shopper for years). So I was hoping to get some opinions on here.

Where would you shop? Which do you think has the best fresh veg and meat? Do they do free range eggs and chickens?

Hi, this will very much depend on the store as some stores are better than others

I really like the Lidl where I live over the Aldi that is a few miles away, but the Aldi next to where I work is excellent. My local Lidl has much fresher and better quality fruit and veg than my local Aldi for example

Both do free range eggs and chicken, I dont eat meat but my family prefer Lidl but will eat both.

i do think that Aldi offers a wider choice than Lidl, but I prefer quite a bit of the chilled stuff at Lidl, they also have a bakery and stock Hovis bread

On the other hand Aldi do excellent frozen raw prawns, low calorie cereal bars and excellent brioche rolls

i tend to share my shopping over both stores, and then visit Sainsburys or Waitrose now and again for things I cannot get at either Aldi or Lidl

For me on a regular basis neither, we occasionally go to Aldi but more for the non food items. Now before any Aldi/Lidl fanatics jump on me for being a shop snob im really looking forward to Netto being back hopefully in my area.

  • We don't have a Lidl near us, but we'd probably use it to supplement our regular Aldi shop if we did. I find the main difference is that Lidl are good for buying branded packaged stuff at a discount, wheras Aldi is good for non-branded staples. I've always found the F&V at Aldi to be fresher, but I think it really depends on which one has the highest turnover in your area. If they're close together, why not try both?
  • why not have a wander in both stores and see what they have before buying anything

I don't have a preference. It depends on where I am and what I am doing as to which one I go to. One is near my parents. The other near work.
At home we are in the middle. I often go to lidl if the weekend half price offers are good and get my shopping there or go to Aldi if I want the super six. They both sell similar things. But I think Aldi in our town has more selection.
  • Overall I prefer Aldi, our local one is very good....except for joints of meat, which I get from the butcher.

However, I have been to some great Lidls, but my local one is not so good...it seems to vary by individual stores, if you have one of each nearby, check them both out and buy the best from each.

  • I will not return to an Aldi store , until they have removed Parking Eye as the default car parking company.

In the last 2.5yrs they have lost many £0000 from me by bringing a claim for overstaying my parking welcome, they lost at POPLA

Agreed I've had a few parking charge notices from them before (they lose every one) and occasionally park in the car park next door and walk over to Aldi just to avoid the hassle having to appeal the PCN.

Alternate with both to get the best of both worlds - this is what I do so that I don't need to go to the big 4.

Lidl good for weekend offers and Aldi good for Super 6 offers. Aldi good for all the products that are "like" the Brands as noted in their adverts.

It really depends on the management of a particular store if they are good or bad and that changes all the time.

You will only find out what is good for you until you try it out over time.

We don't have Aldi in Northern Ireland but our lidl stores are fantastic

All the meat and poultry is from NI as is most of the veg.

A lot of the cold counter products are also from NI

Everything we have bought has been of excellent quality

The fresh baked bread is the best available where I live. Knocks tesco , sainsburys and asda out of the water both on taste and price
