Aldi or Lidl?

  • It's Lidl for me, there is a great one near where I work, great for fresh F & V, eggs, milk, fresh meat, frozen/fresh fish, cheese, frozen pizza, wine, actually happy with it all. The only slight problem is the range of products, you often have to wait until they have a promotion and then you have to get it when you see it. It sound like you have the opportunity to get to know both your local stores. (I have nothing against Aldi but it is not so convenient.)

    January £100. £96.20
    February £100. £1.64
  • It really depends on the store.

I have a small, but very conveniently located Aldi, which I use for my regular stuff.

There is a much bigger Lidl, which I only get to now and again. The fruit, veg and meat ranges there are much bigger. The farmed elk steaks were fab.

    Both do free range, ranges.

  • I will not return to an Aldi store , until they have removed Parking Eye as the default car parking company.

In the last 2.5yrs they have lost many £0000 from me by bringing a claim for overstaying my parking welcome, they lost at POPLA

That's terrible, our doesn't have that...just normal free parking

  • Thanks all. Sounds like I'll have to alternate a bit between the two until I figure it out.
  • If I had to make a choice, it would be lidl.
I like to go to Aldi once every 3/4 months to do a stock cupboard shop. I'll buy trays & trays of beans, chopped toms, tins to go on toast, tom pur!e, pasta, rice & cereals, loo rolls. Once I was fortunate enough to be in there at the right time & found mushy peas for 4p a tin so I grabbed 2 trays. This became a running joke amongst my family & friends as hoarding for the zombie apocalypse!
Whilst I'm doing this shop I'll also purchase my meat & cleaning products for the next fortnight or so & have no complaints from the family. We're not too keen on their freezer section but I'm a cook from scratch kinda girl so for the staples, I think it's excellent value for money & quality.
I look forward to my weekly lidl shop armed with a rough guide meal plan & notes on what needs topping up. You never know what you might find as they change sections over once a week or so. This morning I had a near full trolley for £55, this included a few christmas bits to squirrel away, lunch box items for 4 & everything I need to make meals until next Saturday including today's pork roast. I won't shop now until next weekend apart from bread & milk.
I prefer lidls frozen range & their F&V but agree with the other posters in that you have to find what works best for you & your lifestyle, ie, I could probably find squash for the children cheaper but lidl's high juice doesn't have nasty sweeteners in & we'll only have clover or butter on our bread!

You are so lucky to have access to both! I shop at Lidl normally because Aldi is ages away, but when I was on s/c holiday I used an Aldi. I would say that they are similar but with some specific diffferences and it depends on personal taste which you go for. If they are both close to you I'd take a walk around both and pick what appeals from each.
For instance, Aldi advertises it's 'alike' products, but Lidl has those too - Lidl Pimms and Balileys alike are delicious (in my opinion). They both do non food offers twice a week and both send out emails so you can see what offers are coming up.
Lidl does some organic and Fairtrade products, but not all are stocked at all branches, so again it's most accurate to actually go and look.
Both stores have chilled meat products which have less water in than their counterparts in other stores eg wafer thin sliced ham etc

Not all Aldi supermarkets operate parking through Parking Eye, there is one that I tend to go to more than the one on my doorstep which does not have this system at all. In fact parking is free.

To the OP. I prefer Aldi to Lidl (Lidl is too far for me to get too and their choice is not as good).

In Aldi I will buy their own brand Magnum washing up liquid which is cheaper and better than Fairy. I buy fresh free-range eggs, fresh meat: Aberdeen Angus steaks and mince. Outdoor reared pork chops, sausages, bread, some chocolate eg Jive is just like Twix, teabags (their gold brand is gorgeous). I buy their yoghurts - the thick and creamy ones are 27p, I buy Fruit Fools (Sainsbury's price around 70p - Aldi is 39p). I also get tinned spuds (store cupboard item for me), tinned tomatoes. Fresh fruit and veg, lemonade, Everyday Essentials porridge (their's has to be about the best and it is only about 75p a bag), Benefit flakes (just like Special K only cheaper and they taste no different). I also buy washing powder from Aldi.

For things that I can't get I use other supermarkets such as Morrisons or even Sainsburys (which is too expensive).

Completely agree with you Horace... I also stock up on that W-U-L & their steak is the one of the best we've ever had.
