I just buy tesco premium...6 tins for £1.88! You could always just experiment with lots of cheap brands, Try mixing dry food and tinned but gradually increasing the dry food ratio till it's 100%

    Hello!

I have been buying Hills Science Plan dried cat food for my cat Arthur for years. I now have a second cat, (Jimmy) and need to restock with cat food.

Do you think if I dropped down to a lower cost food like "Go cat" for instance it would affect the health of my cats?

I only feed my cats dry food as I feel it is better for them. I would love to hear what other brands other people use. What are the best buys?

I got a great deal in Home and Bargain recently, they had Perfect Fit (made by Waltham) for £1.99 a bag which normally would cost £8. I think maybe it was end of line though as they don't have it in mine any more.

Although the scientific advice would probably suggest to go for a 'tailored' dry food, e.g. house cat, hairball, senior, we have had lots of cats over the years who were fed on Go Cat before these premium brands existed and they all lived long healthy lives.
  • Hi my vet recommended this food a couple of years back and my cats have been on it since then, I rate it highly ( the cats scoff it down pretty quickly so I guess they do too) although it is pricey, but quite frequently the big pet store chains have a "buy two get one free" promotion so I tend to stock up then. I currently have five bags in the cellar - something my children find vastly amusing!

I work as a receptionist in a vets (who are not affiliated to any particular brand food so can honestly give recommendations according to a pets needs) & can honestly say that yes, most of the expensive ones are better than the likes of go-cat. felix, whiskers etc, which are made with poor quality ingredients & lots of additaves. These foods are best described as the "junk food" of the pet food market, fine as an occasional treat but not good nutritional value or nourishment on a daily basis. Hills, Eukunaba, Nutro & Iams are all good quality.

You'll find quite a few threads of interest there.

    Good luck. :)

I used to feed my cats nutro
you can get the bags delivered to your home by Nutro themselves, and in the long run, it is economical to do it this way. I used to buy the biggest size and have it delivered, the food is good quality.
also james wellbeloved is very good, I believe cheaper than Hills.
IMHO go cat is awful awful stuff. I would not touch Iams either

hate to say it but all of our cats must have been fast food junkies then...

they all got fed on go cat/own brand version of this generally dry food...

they all lived long and happy lives.

our vet never recomeded any of these 'posh' type foods, as he was an older man who probably thought that they were a con.

but we did give most of the cats tuna, except one cos she really didn't like it, so she got chicken.

in fact i think Spike was 15/16 wheh he went and he was catching rabbits till the day he went... (probably what got him even the dog couldn't catch them!!!!)

Nice to see you have a choice! We must have the pickiest cat in the world, especially when it comes to wet food!

She ranged from cheap food to expensive. And has lately started to like the STUPIDLY expensive food, which I laugh at my mum for buying!! Now she cant get the cat off it. Hehe. Its costing her about £3 a day in wet food :)

Thanks for all the advice. Has anyone looked into the likes of Aldi's and Lidl's. I'm sure I remember seeing they had bags of what looked like own brand but a "Premium" line of cat food?

It's funny isn't. i will happily scrimp and save for myself but struggle to short change my cats!
